I use Amazon to read reviews of books, and also to find books that I like. They have features that show you other books you might enjoy and books that are commonly bought with the one on the page.
However, I rarely buy from them. I go to the library to get them free or go to a local bookstore. Also, if I can, I'll borrow the book from a friend or download an ebook form of it.

I mean, they're just as good as any other book...I get Amazon gift cards from at least one person on my birthday and Christmas, and that money usually goes to books. I like how easy it is to preorder books on Amazon as well, and they're so good about shipping things out that I have always gotten a preordered book on the day it came out, no backup or anything.

Amazon is my best friend when it comes to books. I self publish ebooks there, and their program is awesome and super easy to use. They're really helpful as well for authors. But then you have to be careful because nowadays, everyone is free to self-publish and you end up with a lot of poorly edited, if edited at all, stories and nonsense. (I really hope I do not fall into this category!)
Like Scott mentioned, Amazon also recommends books to you, based on your browsing/purchase history. Most of the time, Amazon's recommendations are accurate. I don't think I have bought a recommended book from them that I didn't enjoy. And since I only buy ebooks these days (shipping paper books to Japan is crazy expensive!), I can find some really good, though lesser-known books, for super cheap. I kind of like being an indie book-reading hipster.
