Moments of inspiration -- writing while exercising

In our fast-paced life sometimes it is good to multitask. As I am an avid gym-goer and reader/writer, at times I read and write while having a cardio workout on a recumbent exercise bike in the gym. It seems like a waste to cycle for 30 minutes without doing anything. And so, I bring a pen and small note pad with me so that I can put down whatever thoughts come to my mind as I cycle. Somehow when on the bike I feel greater inspiration and good ideas come to my mind. Perhaps the improved blood circulation and de-stressing helps in the writing process. It is also the case that the 30 minutes seem to fly by when I am thinking up good ideas and jotting them down.

What has been the experience of other forummers here in generating inspiration for writing? What tips can others share?

This is sometimes called the "Einstein shower" syndrome. Meaning that your mind when involved in a routine, such as ablutions or excercise, is prone to answer questions or offer insight.

Haha. Thanks. I learnt something new today.

I also tend to get the same sort of inspiration when flying. I guess you make a virtue out of being cooped up in an airplane for a few hours. Time for me to book more short-haul flights on budget airlines...

I should not have awarded the term syndrome! It is just really an observation made by a few folks, I am not sure if it is a scientific concept. Airlines? I find exactly the opposite! I seem to always attract the person in the next seat who wants to talk. Train journeys are good though.

I still think that it is a question of ritual, as with excercising, part of the brain is engaged with the mechanical function and the other is at liberty to resolve and perhaps inspire? Time to take a shower :)

I think multitasking is not good as the modern life is too fast. I can take inspiration when I am going somewhere by any transport in condition when I don't drive or when I am at nature. All other places are not good for me.

Its good to know how people can multitask. Unfortunately, it has never worked for me...
