Memoir?

Post by DanieRo »

So, I am pretty new here but I am getting a feel for it, I think. So for a long time now I have wanted to complete my memoir. I am only 21, so that may sounds dumb, but why not at 21? A lot of years have passed and there are some quirky stories that come of it. The problem is every time I get somewhere, I think it is trash and start from scratch, I don't know how to keep it going. Usually it is funny, I write little witty stories about my life and the strange things that have happened in it. But I started something else recently, that is much darker, and it's about love. I feel like it is what I should be writing, but I don't want to. And it troubles me because some parts are really serious, some are cynical ( or both ) and some are comical. So I guess what I am asking is, anyone else out there working on some type of memoir? And any advice on how to keep going and make people interested in it? ( without it being a sob story)

Peace and Love,
D

I'm working on someone else's memoir right now. Just like a novel, I believe you need to find a theme or story that the memoir is about? Why are you writing it in the first place? What is it that you're hoping to get your readers to understand? You can deviate here and there to add detail to the story, but you need to bring it back to the story as soon as possible. Otherwise, if your story wanders, so will your readers.

Hope that's some help.

Do you keep a diary? Have you thought of writing a novel based on your diary, e.g. The Diary Of Adrian Mole, Bridget Jones Diary. Like the themes you mentioned, there's a lot of humorous moments in these books, things people can identify with, woven with angst, happiness, sadness and the odd cringe-worthy event. I think a memoir is fine but it should have a purpose to keep the reader interested in you. Eventually the chapters need to culminate into some sort of resolution otherwise it runs the risk of resembling an unfinished blog on the web. Keep writing!
