Review of Hacharias Zona, the Wizard with a Red Beard
Hacharias Zona, the Wizard with a Red Beard by S P Ireland is a magical fictional novel ideal for older children and pre-teens. Readers will be immersed in an adventure with witches, wizards, dragons, and talking animals. This book is a prequel allowing an opportunity for further instalments.
Belle Oldred is about to start her first day at the Zona School for the Talented. From a small child, it was clear that she had magical powers and was a witch with good intentions. Belle lives with her mother and brother, but her father sadly died some time ago.
Hacharias Zona is a magnificent wizard with a bright red beard. His school comprises fifteen students. Upon meeting him, Belle is captivated by his power, gentle nature, and striking facial hair. Belle begins her tuition of magic, potions, and spells. Her school years help her to become a powerful witch, helped by a dragon, animal friends, and Hacharias. Little does she know she is embarking on a life of love, adventure, tragedy, and battling evil.
The story comprises adventure as well as grief and loss. The author has not been afraid to include death in the chapters. Although these sad parts of the book may be hard for young readers, it is a way to introduce the unavoidable loss that we all experience. Excitement and suspense are abundant. Battles between good and evil and animal encounters capture the imagination. I especially enjoyed the addition of a dragon, a beautiful, mythical creature brought to life by the author.
Imagination is ever-present with bewitching spells. I liked the physical descriptions of the characters and the places they reside. These descriptions bring the magical world to life. The imagination continues in the characters. Each character has a gripping back story and individual personalities.
The story includes twists and turns, and the character's histories intertwine. The plot is well-structured and fast-paced. The momentum carries throughout and makes the book a page-turner. The conclusion leaves unanswered questions as it is a prequel, making the reader eager to learn more and discover what is in store for the characters.
I was disappointed at the loss of characters as I became invested in them. I wonder if this would be sad for younger readers and make them lose interest in the story. Although these aspects are integral to the plot, I thought they gave the book a sombre feel.
I found a few errors in the text, but I think the book has been professionally edited. I enjoyed the story. Witches, wizards, and magic are plentiful, but there are a few too many sad parts. I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars.
