Review of Racing the Wild
“Racing the Wild: A Journey of Freedom and Friendship” by Rosanna Andrea Feeken is a powerful and moving young adult novel that captures the resilience and determination of a teenage boy named Chris. Set against the backdrop of the Australian bushland, this story delves into themes of personal freedom, friendship, and the struggle against adversity.
Chris, a teenager halfway through year 8, starts at a new school at the beginning of the story. Despite his initial shyness, Chris quickly makes friends, demonstrating his intelligence and the depth of his character. However, his life outside of school is far from easy. Alongside his bullying older twin brothers, Chris works for their father, Leon Franklin, a renowned racehorse trainer. Their daily routine involves mucking out stables, feeding, and exercising horses under the oppressive rule of their abusive father. This relentless work and the abusive relationships at home create a harsh environment that Chris struggles to endure.
One of the most compelling aspects of Chris’s character is his passion for sketching. This hobby provides him with a much-needed therapeutic escape from the tension and abuse he faces daily. His sketches are not just drawings, but a lifeline that helps him process his emotions and find some solace amid the chaos.
Chris’s determination to fight for what he believes is right often lands him in trouble, both at home and at school. This trait becomes particularly significant when the horse he has been training comes under threat. Faced with the potential loss of the animal he has grown attached to, Chris makes a perilous decision. He embarks on a dangerous journey through the Australian bushland, driven by a mix of fear, hope, and a fierce sense of justice.
Feeken’s vivid descriptions of the Australian landscape add a rich, immersive quality to the narrative. The vast, untamed bushland becomes a character in its own right, reflecting Chris’s inner turmoil and the wild, unpredictable path he must navigate to find freedom and protect the horse he loves.
The novel is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of friendship and self-expression. Chris’s journey is not just a physical one but also an emotional and psychological adventure that challenges him to confront his fears and grow beyond the limitations imposed by his abusive environment.
"Racing the Wild” has been well-received for its realistic portrayal of difficult family dynamics and its inspiring message of hope and resilience. It resonates deeply with young adults and older readers, offering a gripping and emotional read that underscores the importance of fighting for one’s beliefs and the invaluable support of friends. Additionally, the book has been praised for its rich character development, immersive world-building, and thought-provoking themes that explore identity and self-discovery. Furthermore, it has been exceptionally well edited; I didn’t find any errors.
In summary, “Racing the Wild” by Rosanna Andrea Feeken is a beautifully crafted tale that combines adventure, emotional depth, and the stark realities of life under abuse. It is a significant contribution to contemporary young adult literature, offering readers a story that is both heart-wrenching and uplifting. I didn’t find anything to dislike in this book; its seamless blend of adventure and emotional depth captivates me. Its nuanced portrayal of abuse adds complexity to the narrative. I can’t rate it less because the book’s ability to evoke both heartache and hope makes it deserving of a 5 out of 5 star rating. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a poignant and uplifting journey in contemporary young adult literature.
