This book begins with a baptism scene. James gives his life to Christ and is baptized. During the baptism, James sees a flash of light. To his amazement, nobody else seems to have seen it. Three days later, as he is fishing, he sees a similar light. Did James imagine the light? If he did see the light, what does it mean? And why was the light in the exact place where he was baptized? What does it all mean? Nobody seems to have any answers for him.

Few Are Chosen by Greg Maher tells the story of James, Debbie, Matt, and Leah. These four are tasked with a spiritual mission that will test their faith to the core. They must contend with the forces of darkness to ensure the fulfillment of their heavenly assignment. With the backing of the heavenly host, they fight to ensure their safety. The fate of the world lies in their hands, and they must make a decision on who they are allied to.

I loved that this book teaches the concept of the Book of Life in a story format. Although its target audience is young adults, the book has the potential to teach many people about having your name written in the Book of Life and what it implies. The book is written in a simple-to-understand language without much complexity. It does not lose its main focus and quotes direct scripture.

The only thing I did not like about the book was that the story dragged on for a long time before a major development. Not many people may have the patience to wait. I would have loved to see a dramatic scene in the middle. It would have been nice to feel the climax somewhere in the middle. I also noticed a few plot holes. However, this may be because the book was intended for a younger audience. They may not look too deeply into the story.

Due to the above sentiments, I rate the book 3 out of 5 stars. It does not deserve anything lower as it does have elaborate action at the finale. It did not deserve anything higher because the book dragged on too long.

I recommend the book to anyone interested in learning about the Book of Life. The book quotes direct scriptures and attempts to explain more about what they mean.

The idea of reading the Book of Life through a story sounds like a unique and insightful way to introduce young adults to spiritual concepts. While the pacing might feel slow for some, especially with the lack of a dramatic middle, the action-packed finale seems to make up for it. It could be a good read for those looking to understand scripture in a more accessible way.

The concept of a spiritual mission tied to the Book of Life sounds intriguing, but it seems like the pacing could be tighter. A stronger midpoint twist might have made the journey more engaging.

Greg Maher’s story mixes spirituality with adventure, offering a unique take on the Book of Life. While the slow pace and a few plot holes might be a turn-off for some, it’s still a thought-provoking read, especially for young adults exploring deeper spiritual concepts.
