My True Love Gave To Me: Twelve Holiday Stories (SPOILERS)

Post by 3chicnP »

My True Love Gave To Me: Twelve Holiday Storiesis an anthropology with twelve short stories written be twelve different authors. I had this book on my shelf for a while but started reading it two days ago. I honestly don't like anthologies because I find it hard to adapt to the characters and plot. Each story is about 20 pages (some shorter) so I have a hard time moving from one story to the next. Here's a review for each short story:

Midnights by Rainbow Rowell - 2.5 stars
The whole thing was confusing and I didn't realize what was happening until towards the end of it. I wish it had a meaning and a message to it, like Rainbow's other stories. For a short story, there's too much kissing in it. That was what happened throughout the whole story, Noel kissing other girls and Mags at the end. There wasn't a plot to it.

The Lady and the Fox by Kelly Link - 3 stars
I loved the story at the start and middle because it had a great plot. Towards the end, it got ridiculous. If Kelly Link changed the last two pages of the story, I would've given it 4.5 stars. I loved how it was a mysterious romantic story. It was sweet and it kept me on my toes the whole time. I was disappointed at the end because it sounded like some children's book. Fenny being a Fox and The Lady? It's silly.

Angels in the Snow by Matt De La Pena - 4.5 stars
After I finished his short story, I instantly went onto bn to look for some of his books. This short story was the best out of the 12. It had me smiling and heart racing the whole time. I wish that Matt would turn the short story into a novel because I want to know more about Shy and the girl (I'm sorry I forgot her name.) It's a realistic story and the plot is amazing. I would buy the book just to read this story.

Polaris is Where You'll Find Me by Jenny Han - 3.5 stars
This short story was the shortest of all 12. In the beginning I thought it was childish because it's about a girl getting adopted by Santa and living in The North Pole with elves. Later on, the plot caught on and it was amazing. I love how she met Lar (something with Lar, I forgot his name) and still remembers. It's a sweet short story and the ending made me smile.

It's a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown by Stephanie Perkins - 5 stars
I LOVE THIS SHORT STORY. It was cute and sweet and had an interesting plot. I wish Stephanie would continue the story with the characters because I want more of them. I love how it's about an Asian girl and white guy. You don't get that a lot- just another reason to love Stephanie Perkins. I re-read the story again because it was amazing.

I've tried to read the rest of the stories but I lost interest in them. They didn't catch my eye and I found them boring. Overall, I would read this book just for the few short stories I enjoyed. I found new authors to read because of it. :)

I actually had a very similar experience with the book! I absolutely loved the first 6 stories, then couldn"t get through the rest. I am saving it for next winter in hopes of enjoying the stories.
