The Charlotte Westing Chronicles by Aprilynne Pike

Post by TaylorUryuu »

Okay, so I don’t even know where to begin with my review of the first two books of the Charlotte Westing Chronicles. I guess, with the fact that there’s supposed to be a third book out this year, and I freaking can’t wait to read it.

Like, holy crap. I love this series so far.

Imagine being able to see the future- a future that involves the many many murders of people that you know and care about, and you are expected to just let it happen. Kind of like the Father’s Day episode of Doctor Who, where the future, when messed with, often screws up everything worse than it originally was supposed to be screwed up.

Sleep No More is so exciting, where the oracle of a main character, Charlotte, keeps having visions of her fellow classmates getting shot, stabbed, torn to pieces, etc. As a girl with a fully working conscience, it is only natural that she wants to save her friends, despite the “rules” oracles have for each other.

“Never reveal that you are an Oracle to anyone except another Oracle. Fight your visions with all your strength. Never surrender. Never give up. Don’t close your eyes.”

Now, keep in mind that Charlotte isn’t even supposed to allow herself to see her own visions, never mind try to change the outcome of them. But when the murders begin and she meets a man that seems to know more about her powers than she does, and how to use them, as well as how to easily change the future with seemingly no consequences, she’s obviously intrigued. She then finds herself dealing with a serial killer up close and personal, which was incredibly thrilling to read about for a horror lover, such as I.

The second book, Sleep of Death, is also quite a nice read. Charlotte meets Sophie, who is not an oracle, but a sorceress. Charlotte has never had a “magical” friend with powers like herself, and she has understandable trust issues due to events in the first book, as well as her usually highly secretive life. Sophie, however, seems perfectly comfortable laying her secrets out on the table for Charlotte, and soon, they are partners of “justice”, using their powers to prevent the new murderous threat in their small town.

These books have something for everyone, except maybe small children- a bit of romance, bit of fantasy, bit of horror. To me, I truly enjoyed reading them, forever trying to guess what was going to happen. I also really loved the back story included to show a bit more about each character- it made them more likable to me. Except for when Charlotte would do things that made me yell at the books while I read them- she sometimes does some pretty questionable things, but to me, that only made me want to read more quickly, and more often, as these books were pretty hard to put down.

P.S. Aprilynne is such a cool name.
