The House of Ivy & Sorrow by Natalie Whipple

Post by TaylorUryuu »

So I’m actually really surprised by how much I loved this book.

I first saw it on Goodreads and the cover drew me to it, and I was a little discouraged by the fact that so many people rated it negatively. However, everyone is different and even if some people didn’t like it, I’m sure other people would love this book just like I did.

The story gave off a similar feeling that I get when I watch Halloweentown every year in October for the first time. It’s about witches and their magic, but not the kind that requires wands- it requires cauldrons, slug mucus, fingernails, and other odd, grotesque ingredients to make up their spells. There were animal eyeballs everywhere.

The description that the author uses definitely keeps your mind’s eyes charmed, and for me, the characters were all very likable and made me care about what was going to happen to them. This book has quite a few mysteries that the characters need to solve, and I really enjoyed reading it.

There’s a bit of romance in there for people who like that genre, also, but the book was mainly about magic, which was what I was reading it for. Either way, you won’t be disappointed. There’s also some humor involved- some dad jokes, some not dad jokes. Pretty amusing, all in all.

This is a story about magic, and the struggle that it is to use it for good, and not evil. Of course, a book wouldn’t be that interesting if there wasn’t a little bit of evil mixed in, now would it?

Murder, curses, people with hidden intentions. Pure entertainment.
