Ok this is a random trilogy that I found a complete set of shamefully at Walmart. Of course I was intrigued from the get go because all three books were combined into one. I am the crazy person who will read an entire series in a week and loose sleep over it if I do not know what happens next. Also, I wanted something different and easy to read at the beach. These books definitely fit that mold. This trilogy is about a girl named Wendy who get ready for it.... finds out that she is a troll. Unexpected right? The trilogy begins with Wendy describing a scenario of her mother wanting to kill her because she knows that Wendy is a monster and stole her real baby. Yes I know it sounds outrageous and off the wall, but honestly I loved it. Not only is Wendy a troll but she just happens to be a troll princess. Whose kingdom is at war with another tribe of trolls and is in peril and it is up to Wendy to save the day. Keep in mind that these trolls do not fit your usual perception of troll. Hocking takes a unique refreshing twist on her definition of trolls. There is romance, there is royalty, there is a defiantly normal teenager, and fantasy, all of which I am a sucker for. If you are too, I would highly recommend the Trylle Trilogy to you.
Like you said Hocking definitely gives the reader a new perception of trolls. These are not your usual trolls that hide underneath bridges and demand payment in order to cross. That is exactly what made me fall in love with these books. I love when authors take something that we believe is true and then spin it into something completely did and that is exactly what Hocking did. Throw in a little romance and this series instantly became a favorite of mine. I would recommend it to anybody who enjoys fantasy but also enjoys having a relatable main character.
I read most of the trilogy--I got stuck somewhere in the middle of book 3. (i have issues finishing any series.) I appreciated the atmosphere it provided. I liked that, and I liked the odd love triangle. I thought that guy, Finn, wasn't good enough for her because he wasn't willing to defy convention even though he was crazy for her. Loser! Obviously, not having finished it, I don't know how that resolves itself. I thought it had some great scenes of a fantasy nature that I enjoyed. I did see the omnibus at Barnes & Noble--it must've come out recently. I have the three paperback set, and it was a while back that I read them!
