This book will just suck you in and you will totally understand slam poetry. If you have no idea what it means you will grab the idea by just reading it. If you have an idea about it you will start loving it. If you already love it, you are going to love it more.

This book has beautifully portrayed how a relationship takes places by using slam poetry and has given a lot of ideas in different aspects of life :P
“According to the thesaurus... and according to me... there are over thirty different meanings and substitutions for
the word
mean.
(I quickly yell the following words; the entire class flinches- including Will)
Jackass, jerk, cruel, dickhead, unkind, harsh, wicked,
hateful, heartless, vicious, virulent, unrelenting, tyrannical, malevolent, atrocious, bastard, barbarous, bitter, brutal, callous, degenerate, brutish, depraved, evil, fierce, hard, implacable, rancorous, pernicious, inhumane, monstrous, merciless, inexorable.
And my personal favorite—asshole.”
Hahaha, the poetry above is just hilarious and when you read the book you will laugh so hard!

This book is about an eighteen year old teenage girl who moves from Texas to Michigan. Due to her father’s death and moving, she has been affected a lot. Although, she appears to be tough, she is breaking down.
When she moves in the first day, she meets Will and his younger brother Caulder. They are her news neighbors. Although, it was only the first day, Layken’s brother, Kel seemed to get along with Caulder. After some days with Will, Layken starts to mend the broken pieces.

Will and Layken have their first memorable date which was precious for both of them. But they never knew what was a head of them, never knew what the fate has planned for them. When something slammed to both their faces and they have to take back a step, the situation brought an abrupt stop to their relationship. Layken goes back to feel broken and Will who doesn’t know how to deal with the issue. Everything becomes difficult between them and they both are finding their ways out of it.

I really loved this book a lot. It talks to you in a very personal level and makes you realize many things(it did for me). It sucked me in that I couldn’t stop reading it. I had my finals the next day but I still had to finish this book because I couldn’t really pay attention to anything else. It keeps making you think what slam poetry will come up next, what will happen next and some twists and turns that makes you gasp. The slam poetry that will totally make you fall in love with them and maybe you might start talking like it. I really recommend to this book. It was an amazing story. Each part of the story will make you feel something.

A boy that I'm seriously, deeply, madly, incredibly, and undeniably in love with.

I loved this book too. There's a huge slam poetry scene where I live and I often got caught up in the power of people performing. I was amazed at how Colleen Hoover could capture that in a book - without the live performance. It was heartwarming and heartbreaking. I just...didn't like the end. I'll leave it at that so I don't give away any spoilers. Overall, loved this book. Colleen Hoover somehow writes books where I fall in love with the characters every time.

„Slammed” is the first book of the series with the same name, written by Colleen Hoover. It was first published on the 5th of January 2012 and it is a Young Adult novel. In my opinion, it is one of the most complex novels for teenagers as it approaches a variety of themes, such as love, family, friendship and loss of someone close.

The action is presented through the eyes of Layken, an eighteen years old girl who has just moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan, from Texas, six months after her father’s death. She and her nine years old brother Kel supported their mom in her decision to move, apparently because of financial reasons. In the same day, Layken meets Will, her neighbor and they both feel attracted to each other since the first moment. In the coming days their relationship moves forward but once the school starts, they both understand they have to put their feelings aside. In this moment, one would think this is another cheesy love story of impossible love and heartbreaks. But the author uses just the right amount of romance and romantic encounters.

Parallel to the relationship between Will and Layken, one can observe as well a family that has learned to cope with loss in many ways: Will lost both his parents and now has to watch after his younger brother, Layken and Kel lost their father and will now face another critical moment. The characters deal with their emotions united, as one family. Layken becomes more mature and Will finds balance between his family and his love.

Another theme present in the book is the friendship between Layken and Eddie, her classmate. Eddie was abandoned by her mother at an early age and forced to move from foster home to foster home. She is somehow the voice of reason for Layken, when she has difficulties coping with her mother’ secret.

The novel is very well balanced, having funny moments, romantic encounters, family warmth and as well drama. In addition, the combination between prose and poetry is extraordinary and gives the book an interesting touch. The characters show their feelings in poems that are recited in Slam evenings. The concept of Slam is also well explained by the author. Moreover, each chapter starts with lyrics from the Avett Brothers that highlight the dominant emotions or the main idea or the chapter.

As a conclusion, I would give this novel a 4 out of 4 stars, not only due to the story and the easy writing, but also to the diversity of themes that it touches. Sure, each character’s personality could have been a little more defined but the sublime way in which the emotions are revealed through simple words is fabulous.
