Lock & Key by Sarah Dessen

Post by BookSavvy90 »

Sarah Dessen is one author I always go to when I need a girly read. Lock & Key is one example of a very chick lit type of book that I read a couple years ago. It was a really good book that deals with some harsh topics, mainly abandonment. It's about a girl named Ruby who is abandoned by her mother and is taken under the guardianship of her older sister Cora and her husband. This book follows Ruby as she deals with being thrusted into a new life with her sister and comes to grips with reality. I like this book because it teaches you one valuable lesson: you can't go on in life alone. And even if they piss you off siblings are important.

9/10 will probably read again the next time I need a girly read.

I love Sarah Dessen and was certain I had read all her books until I read your description of Lock and Key. It's now on my TBR list and I should get to it this summer for sure. Thanks for the recommendations!

I agree, this is one of my favorite books. I haven't read anything else by this author but she sure knows how to write in order to bring out emotion from you. Also the characters in the book were great, and I loved how much detail she gives to every character and their back story. I can definitely see myself rereading this book. :)

Honestly not one of my favorites by her. I absolutely adored the Truth About Forever and Just Listen. What I like about Sarah Dessen is she writes about a lot of relatable topics and so if you don't find yourself identifying with one in particular then you are bound to love another. She was probably my favorite author in middle school and high school, even now as a 24 year old I can't help but pick up her new material.

Sarah Dessen is my favorite young adult author. :D I read all her books one summer. I love that there are small connections between each book. I'm (im)patiently waiting for another Sarah Dessen book to come out!

Sarah Dessen is by far one of my favorite authors. I love how relatable her books are and how they just take you away into them so easily. Lock and Key is about a young girl in which her whole family has left her at some point and she goes to live with her sisters "new" family. I liked it because its about a broken family and how the main author has issues trusting in others being there. Through the book she grows. I grew up with trust issues so I was able to fully relate to the character and enjoyed seeing that I may not be the only one on earth who has challenges growing up the way I did.

I love Sarah Dessen's books. I haven't read all of them but I have read a good amount. I read a Lock and Key a long time ago and I did enjoy it. I don't think it's my favorite one but I still thought it was really good. I really don't think there is a Sarah Dessen book that I don't like.

I have to be honest...I don't like Sarah Dessen's writing/books that much. I bought my first book by her Lock and Key and didn't like it for some reason. Maybe the writing, the storyline or characters, but something just didn't stick right with me. It left me kind of aloof and unfulfilled if that makes sense.

However, I thought maybe it was just this one book by her I didn't like so I got another one by her Just Listen. I absolutely loved it, though it didn't end how I like stories to end, (aka open ended like Lock and Key) I really liked the storyline and characters. I thought "Wow Sarah Dessen redeemed herself for me" so guess what I did? I bought two more books by her in hope of liking them like Just Listen.

I was sorely mistaken, the next two books I felt where pointless reads because they obviously built up how the cliche story would go only to end disappointingly open ended and as if you started from square one again.

I know this sounds like a " I hate Sarah Dessen" post but it's not. I love one of her books! I'm simply trying to give viewers a different perspective on her writing. Personally, I would ignore this if you want and go ahead and read her books. Make up your own opinions because everyone is different!
