Official Review: Surrender at Sunrise by Tonya Royston

4 out of 4 stars

Surrender at Sunrise is the third and final installment in the young adult fantasy series, The Sunset Trilogy, by Tonya Royston. I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing all three books in the series, and I can safely say that Ms. Royston’s first series has been a complete success. The first book was mesmerizing and the second book, while a bit slow-paced for my taste, laid a strong foundation for the events that were yet to come.
In this final book of the trilogy, the series is wrapped up with lots of action, adventure, suspense, and thrills. I can honestly say that I was on the edge of my seat for the majority of this book. Surrender at Sunrise picks up right where the previous book left off, and I would not recommend reading this book unless you have read the two previous books, Shadows at Sunset and Silence at Midnight in their intended order.
Laken Sumner, with her special ability to communicate with animals, doesn’t have much time to be heartbroken after her recent breakup. There is a stranger in town threatening her, and somehow Xander and Noah (the two men who have won over her attention) are involved as well. It turns out that both of these men know a lot more about Laken than they have led her to believe, and it’s no coincidence that they showed up in town around the same time. Now Laken has discovered that she isn’t the only one in town with special abilities. All three of their lives, and the curses that accompany them, have been intertwined for years. Uncovering the truth about their history is only the first step to stopping a series of murders.
The above summary is ridiculously lame when compared to what actually happens in the story; I am intentionally being vague to avoid giving away too many of the surprises that are lurking around pretty much every page of this book. This is by far the best book of the series, as everything that happened in the previous two books comes together in such a perfect way. At one point, I was skeptical and thought I had come across a gaping plot hole, but eventually the twist all came together to form a perfectly constructed puzzle. I can’t get over how well-crafted this story was. It’s not often that I can be fooled and shocked by twists and turns in a story, but this one had me guessing (usually incorrectly) all over the place. Kudos to the author for that.
I would have to be insane to give this book anything less than 4 out of 4 stars. Another moose scene makes an appearance in this book as well, and that alone would have been enough to have me addicted. I strongly recommend this series to anyone who loves animals, realistic fantasy, and page-turning suspense accompanied by cute romance. If you’re like me and thought that the second book seemed a bit lacking in excitement compared to the first book, then I strongly encourage you to not give up. Finish out the series with this book, and you will not be disappointed at all. The best was definitely saved for last.
