I have added today's coming-of-age BOTD to my WTR list. I wish this was on audio! Being a HS teacher, I'm constantly on the lookout for multi-layered books that engage, entertain, and teach teens about life, growing up, and, most importantly, themsleves. I plan to read this, and hopefully it turns out to be something I can use in the classroom. Thank you so much!

Thanks for the thoughtful review of this book! At first glance, this book doesn't appear to be much, but the blurb gives the reader a peek inside, but your review really seals the deal for me. It sounds like the author put a lot of thought into this storyline, the time period and the characters that we are given. It encourages my interest in reading more about them. I am definitely putting this book on my to-be-read shelf. I am looking forward to reading this book!

After reading this review I feel Spike could be a very important character for teenagers. One of the most important trials when you’re a teenager is becoming comfortable with who you are. I can appreciate Spike’s contradictions for that very reason. There’s no need to be what anyone else thinks you should be! It is so much better to be who you are, even if others are unable to make sense of who that may be!! What a great review! Congratulations on Book of the Day.

A YA contemporary novel of an Italian immigrant sounds interesting. The well-developed characters in this book make want to read it. Thanks for the review.
Feeling upset sometimes may be unavoidable, but acting distressed is always optional.

The book would be appealing to the YA crowd because of the plot and the characters seem relatable. It is good that the review cautioned about graphic scenes so that readers would know if the are up to the novel's content. Congrats and happy reading to us!

Joey, 13, relates his experiences as a young Italian immigrant in 1960s America. He idolizes his older cousin Spike, bold to his shy and tough to his weak. This is another interesting version of the American dream. Will it be a dream come true or a dreadful nightmare? And who is Rudy?

I like your review and I could see a blend of novels in this one. I could see the novel of Goodfellas with younger characters aspiring to be like their older counterparts. I also saw a little bit of the classic young adult novel with things like experimenting with sex and finding who you are. I like that the author didn't include a time period because I could easily imagine this story set in the 1970s as well as the present day.

I think I can safely call this review intriguing. However, I will most likely skip this book. It looks like a deep and deliberate written read, unfortunately not just interested in such for now. nonetheless congrats to the author on #BOTD

This is a really great in-depth review. From reading the sample and your review, this sounds like an interesting coming-of-age novel

From a sampling, this is an interesting youth adult fiction story. The characters such as Spike appear well developed. It is worth a second look. Well done.

Although this isn't really my type of book (I prefer fantasy) the idea of having the narrator be less of a main character is fascinating. And making sure that all the characters are complex and interesting makes any book much better. Thanks for the review!

I think young adults relate with the characters and adults will likely reflect on their lives during their teenage and young adult phase. Now that you said that the plot is a little bit forced, I am more eager to read this book.
