Re: The Hunger Games Series vs. Divergent Series

Post by CaseyPaige »

I tend to lead more towards Hunger Games. It's refreshing to see a female lead who doesn't end up with the boy that is played out to be her ultimate love interest and the fact that she's more concerned with the well being of her world as opposed to just a boy. How often do we get that nowadays? It's usually all about the girl getting the "hot" guy and being absolutely annoying over him. With the Divergent series I found the movies to be more appealing than the books. The books would sometimes become hard to picture until the movie put it in to perspective. Although, I did enjoy the whimsical side of Divergent.

I really enjoyed The Hunger Games. What really made these books great to me was how real of a character Katniss is. Many books (like Divergent) start with a "normal" character who become a hero. I know most people like to think that if thrust in such a situation they too would become great. Most books don't however, address what happens when the hero is done being a hero. The books never go into how affected they are by the trauma that is thrust upon them. We see it everyday with our troops returning home from war. These heroes have risked their lives to defend our country and our rights, and they bear the scars of their battles. Many of these scars are invisible, deep psychological and emotional scars. Katniss, after participating in the Hunger Games, is in many ways a broken woman. She suffers from sever PTSD, which only gets worse after her second time participating in the games. She is a highly flawed character who is often selfish and most importantly scared. She is not the perfect hero we all imagine and idolize. To me that is one of the things that truly sets The Hunger Games apart from other books.

I've read both series and I enjoyed The Hunger Games more. With the Divergent series, as I read through the books I found that I liked it less and less. Reading the third book was difficult because I didn't like that the author changed the style of the book to give tobias' view point. The change just bothered me for some reason.

Though I very much enjoyed both the Hunger Games and Divergent Series, I for one felt that both had a similar style of writing, which included plenty of positives. Where I think both series' fell short was that each lacked in character development and connection.
For instance, I thought, and I know I'm not alone on this, that Katniss was portrayed as somewhat shallow. Yes, it's true that she loved people around her, it seemed that she was not at all the person who sacrificed the most for anything she cared for. In addition, I think it would have been a lot more of an interesting series had there been a lot more introspect into the characters. Katniss was after all a Hunger Games victor, lost her father, best friends in multiple ways, and sister, was involved in a love triangle, and is being pushed into the role of face of the rebellion, which she doesn't seem to quite connect to. If that's not opportunity for further explanation and connection to readers, then I don't know what is.
Now I've only read the first book in the Divergent series and seen no movies, so I suppose I'm not the most qualified here, but I felt somewhat the same way in respect to Tris. The story was good, but I for one didn't connect to Tris as a character.
To wrap this up, while I did have these objections to these two series', the majority of the content is PHENOMENAL. So authors, thanks! It has to be brought up though, before I go, Hunger Games Books>>>>>>>>>>>>>Hunger Games Movies, with full respect to the alternately wonderful actors. Off to probably catch up on Divergent, see ya all!

I thought that both series were fantastic, and although the hunger games has a slight edge over the Divergent series as movies, the Divergent series was better for me. Each book in the divergent trilogy kept me reading but it took me over a month to finish Mockingjay.

I really enjoyed reading both series! I think they both have been compared because of the idea of "this is what we could become" and the government wanting to make a Utopia, but instead earning a 'dystopia'. I personally enjoyed reading the Divergent series more than Hunger Games. I believe if Divergent had made anymore books it could have been better, yet it could have been disastrous, so I'm happy with the pace and the length of this series. For the character development, I believe we had enough to get connected with the main characters (except Eric, in my opinion) and bring tears to my eyes at the finale. I had to read the Hunger Games series in class, and over all enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't like was how long it was taking to get to destroying the government. But I still LOVED IT. I loved the main character and the plot and everything was just gorgeous in both series.

If one is judging by the literature style the n I would say that the hunger games is of better quality. But I would say that the divergent series is much better when it comes to a series that is enjoyable. The hunger games never really gives you hope for the main character. The only hope is for survival. Divergent you get that hope that's more than survival but also for happiness.

I enjoyed Hunger Games more then Divergent. It may be because of reading hunger games first. But Divergent didn't catch my interest as fast as the hunger game series. I actually haven't finished the Divergent series

I have read both series and although post-apoptoliptic type books are not really my favorite, I did enjoy them. I think that I preferred the Divergent Series over The Hunger Games series; mainly because of the fact that helpless children were being thrown together to kill one another.

I read the Divergent series and The Hunger Games series. Both really good series's. They each have this perspective of teens surviving in the ruins of the world. If I had to choice one I liked best ur would have to be Divergent. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat, it's relatable, and it always have you wanting more it's a page turner. Things just don't escalate quickly enough in the hunger games. It gets old and repetitive.

I have read both series (before they were hyped up because of the movies) and loved them both. I agree with some others that they are two series that stand alone. I cannot say which one I enjoyed more, because they were both able to get my attention and keep it for an extended amount of time. I feel there is much more depth in both series than most give them credit for. I have read both more than once, and I am sure I will read them again. Each time, I learn something new or recognize something I may have missed on previous reads. I would recommend them both to friends and even some of my older students. :)

I think the series are being compared a lot since they are both dystopian novels and have cities and places that are seperated like the factions and the groups in Divergent. I enjoy Divergent more because of the action but I feel like the movie portrayal of The Hunger Games movies is more accurate which I enjoy more. They are both great series though!

Both book series do have very similar themes of rebellion, dystopia and being different. Considering I deeply love both of these series, I think both series shouldn't be compared, due to how differently they are written. Both Tris and Katniss have many similarities; both protecting their families, falling in love and in competition with others. I personally can't pick my favourite series, as I love both so dearly.
