Review by Bluebird03 -- Island Games by Caleb J. Boyer

This fast-paced story begins with Matthew and Ryan waking up on an island. This sounds like a dream come true, right? The only problem is that they have no idea how they arrived on the beach or where it is located. In fact, their last memory is of the two of them playing video games at Matthew’s house.
Already great friends, they must now rely on that friendship, and each other, to get them through the trials of being on this island. One minute they are escaping becoming a shark’s next meal, and the next moment they are drowning in quicksand. Each of them will need to use every talent he has and call on all of his strength (both physical and mental). How will these two survive in this strangely beautiful, but deadly, new world? Will they ever be able to return home?
In Island Games by Caleb J. Boyer, both Matthew and Ryan are trying to determine just what strengths they possess. Young adult readers should find them both likable and relatable. Their humor and conversations match those of someone in high school or junior high. I especially enjoyed watching them develop their strengths, as well as their confidence (both in themselves and in each other). Early in the story, they learn that the only way they can accomplish the major feats laid before them is to work together as a team. The author does an excellent job of driving this message home to the readers.
Suspense is the overall tone of the book, with the overlapping themes being friendship, trust, developing self-confidence and teamwork. The author is adept at describing the island's scenery which includes a verdant forest, a beautiful stream and a giant ice cave. Also, I liked that Boyer used foreshadowing in the book. “Little did they know, the games had just begun..." (the author's quote) was one example of this literary device.
Initially, I thought the conversations between the Ryan and Matthew were a bit immature and silly; however, I reminded myself that this is typical teenage jargon. Also, the author was twelve years old when writing this book. The abrupt, and quite unexpected, ending of the book was my only disappointment. Even that is not enough for me to subtract from the rating, as the author explains his reasons for closing in this manner. I will not address the ending further, as I do not wish to provide spoilers.
Based on the points made above, I will rate this YA thriller 4 out of 4 stars. The book appeared to be well edited. This novel will definitely appeal to fans of the YA fantasy genre. Also, many adults may enjoy it as well. The lack of strong language and explicit scenes will appeal to many ages and make it appropriate for younger readers. Anyone not interested in this genre, or in teenage conversations, may elect to pass on this read. I certainly recommend this engaging story.

Yes, I was amazed at the cleverness and determination of the characters at that young age. Thank you, daviddawud, for your very thoughtful and kind comments.daviddawud wrote: ↑06 May 2019, 08:48 This must be an intriguing book to peruse . I can't begin to imagine what will happen to me if I was in their shoes. I love the suspense tone of the book though. Thank you for the wonderful review.

Teamwork was definitely the central theme in this one. And, I agree, that it is such an important lesson to learn early in life. Thank you, kdstrack, for your kind comments!
