Although "The Catcher in the Rye" is one of my all-time favorite books, I came across it a little late (unfortunately!). However, the one book that affected me during my teen years was "Crime and Punishment." Raskolnikov, as an idealistic protagonist, with his good heart and dark thoughts. It was like, for the first time, I could see a character with all his darkness and goodness—a complex character, a grey character! Someone you can truly relate to! I always disliked those heroes who just played in a white zone, like! Come on! Where are your demons?! You have to have some demons to overcome!

Probably The Raven Cycle series. Truly shaped my taste in books when it comes to prose and genre - still waiting on a book that's got a prose so dreamy and whimsical, and with as much focus on a codependent and messed up group of friends.

I haven't read that particular book but I agree that the right book comes along at the right time and I'm glad it helped you :).
Personally, The Hunger Games helped me discover a world beyond the books I had at home, it motivated me to explore and research its themes and facts, showing me that I could do the same with the things I liked and even re-reading it today I love the impact it created at the time and how much you can still learn from it.

Harry Potter series... It shaped my entire perspective on life in general and taught the values of love, friendship, etc...
The fault in our stars by John Green is another life altering book. It simply states things that literally moves our way of thinking.
