Music to My Ears by Heidi M. Simone is the story of a normal 21-year-old girl, living with her family on Rhode Island, with musical aspirations. Told in the first person, Sophia Andrews moves to New York to take a job creating a soundtrack for a movie. While there, her business partner recognizes her beautiful voice and the way it affects him to mean only one thing: she's a semi-siren and she's in grave danger.
The mystery unravels through each new twist and turn and the plot is supported admirably throughout the entirety of the book. The last chapter leaves us craving for more and sitting on the edge our seats, barely willing to wait for the release of the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed each page of the book, and I felt that each scene was presented well; not stretching on too long; not so short as to deprive it of emotion. Even from the start of the very first page, I was drawn in, reluctant to pull my eyes away from the magical pages.
The author, Heidi M. Simone, beautifully expressed confusion, passing out, the realization of terrible things, and the general thoughts running around in Sophia's head. I felt connected to her, her story, her raw emotion, and her journey as each chapter passed.
I was in awe at Heidi's grace with words, events in the book being described with such beauty and power, that after I read it I couldn't unread it. Horrific details, joyous splendor, even things such as boredom and anticipation were brought into the world of the unknown in such a way that they danced upon the pages in ways that many authors struggle to even comprehend.
My only criticism of the book would be the unnatural or seemingly too rehearsed dialog. As a writer myself, I can fully understand the difficulty of crafting dialog in a natural manner, especially when what goes on even before a word is written takes so much thought that it seems an impossible task. Therefore, I cannot judge the book solely on this, and it wasn't significant enough to affect my enjoyment of the book.
The book seemed exceptionally well-edited and I'm happy to report few errors throughout the entirety of the writing.
I think this book would appeal to almost any audience, from the bookworm 10-year old who's just finished Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, to the college student or adult who enjoys a good fantasy book. Although the book contains an attempted rape scene, it is not explicit and could easily be skipped over by someone of a younger age. Dependably on the child, they may not understand what's happening as it's quite subtle and I don't believe it affects the quality of the book to a younger reader.
I believe I've found myself a new favorite book series and I'm jittery just anticipating the release of the second book. For this reason and the reasons stated above, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I couldn't bear giving it a rating any lower, because I simply adored this book from cover to cover, although not literally, I suppose.
