Do you love games? How about a mystery? Then this book should be a must read on your book list.

Matthew and Ryan are best friends who awake to find themselves stranded on a deserted island with only the clothes on their backs and no memory of what happened before they arrived.
Off in the distance the boys spot an abandoned barge. After battling a shark, their first challenge of the island, the boys discovered backpacks, bottled water, food packs, blankets, a change of clothes, a rope, and a knife in an old crate on the barge.
The question on their minds was who did this and why? The next question was how to stay alive and get rescued?
Matthew and Ryan go through several challenges on their journey to leave this mysterious island. They find out things aren't always what they seem. When their friendship gets tested, anger along with doubt rear their ugly heads but the boys soon realize that teamwork is a must. Both grow as individuals, finding their own inner warrior with each challenge.

Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants by Caleb J Boyer was written when he was 12 years old which is simply amazing. The actions and the dialogue used in this book are definitely how I would imagine boys of Matthew and Ryan's age would act, making this the perfect book for young adults ages 10 - 15. The author's description of each challenge pulls you into the scene with the characters, and you actually feel as though you're playing the game with them.

I enjoyed reading this book and going on the journey with these two characters, however I believe certain areas of the book could have given more details and insight. To parents whose child might read this book, it should be noted that there are mildly violent and graphic content during the battles; despite this, there are no obscene words or sexual content found within the novel.
I would recommend reading the authors note first because it really helped me connect to the book by understanding what the author was thinking when he wrote it.

The only thing I disliked about this book was the cliffhanger ending. I realize it represents how life is a cliffhanger with us never knowing what is ahead of us, but I believe the author could have added another chapter instead of such an abrupt ending.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as I feel the author has great potential, and I hope to see more works by this young man in the future. He is a true inspiration for young adults thinking about writing a book to be published.
