Dew Pellucid's The Crystilleries of Eçholand was an extremely original, unique and resourceful fantasy sure to capture the imagination of a broad audience of readers.
Will, a boy of ten, from our world has been trying to find his missing sister for as long as he can remember. Hoping to relieve his mother, who searches a pond that he and his sister had disappeared into when they were very young children, takes a book from his home that once brought him back from another world. He hopes this book and a glowing crystal will help lead him to his sister. Taking his two pets with him, he sets off to the pond and in a every dramatic way ends up in this other world. He discovers his pets were actually from this world and not pets at all but his protectors.
Will is now in a world where there is a twin for every human being. These twins are called Echos and the people from Will's world are called Sounds. In this very well described world Will discovers why children are kidnapped into this world and held captive. He also learns that if a Sound dies then his Echo, his twin, is killed in this world by fearsome creatures called Fate Sealers. If that isn't enough the king, who would like to alter this policy, was murdered. The murderer is then enthroned. Will must find a way to help the people of Echoland and free his sister.
This is an extremely imaginative story with several twists and turns and some formidable bad guys. I truly enjoyed the fact that while this could have been a complicated tale for young readers that the author explained the plot twists effectively using each character's back-story to illustrate the how's and why's of the plot. As I stated before, the author is extremely creative in depicting this world in detail. There are some genuinely fascinating ideas throughout the tale.
This story would be a great read for children from preteen to teen. As an adult I enjoyed this book quite a bit and would not rule myself out as an audience for this book. There is no profanity and no bloody or extreme violence.
I rated The Crystilleries of Eçholand a resounding four out of four stars. This was an imaginative, creative and solidly written book. There were interesting illustrations that resembled watercolor paintings and a beautifully written story line that would keep any reader turning the pages. I found one error throughout the entire book, and it was very minor. The author was very meticulous in the compilation of this novel.
