Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants by Caleb J. Boyer grabs your attention right from the very start. Immediately, we meet the main characters Matthew and Ryan who wake up on an island with no memory of how they got there. The boys soon find that this is no ordinary island. Matthew and Ryan soon discover that they need to work together to overcome the obstacles that they encounter if they are to survive on this strange island. The boys make progress in their journey as long as they stay close to each other and keep their ultimate goals of surviving and returning home in mind.
The thing I liked most about this book is the cliff hanger at the end of each chapter. The author has a real talent for keeping the reader in suspense. The reader never knows what to expect next. The pacing of the book is well done. There were pauses in the action which gave the author time to develop the main characters and themes of the story. The pauses felt like a natural part of the storyline.
The thing I disliked most about the book was the ending. However, I felt better about the way it ended once I read the author’s note at the end of the book. The author does a great job explaining why he wrote the ending the way he did. He aIso explains how he feels readers can apply the lessons in his book to their daily lives. I recommend that anyone who reads this book read the authors note after finishing the book.
I really appreciated the themes that were emphasized in the story. Two of the main themes were friendship and working together to overcome obstacles. As the boys moved to different areas of the island, they faced different challenges to their survival . As each of the obstacles were overcome, Matthew’s and Ryan’s confidence grew. They also became much closer as friends.
I feel that this book would be very good for teenage boys. Readers will relate to the main characters and enjoy all the exciting adventure scenes. They will never be able to guess what happens next. At the end of each chapter, the author skillfully entices the reader to continue reading to see how the story will unfold.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was professionally edited. I only found three minor errors which didn’t affect the rating I gave the book. It was an enjoyable, quick read. Anyone who likes adventure and fantasy will enjoy this story.
