[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Lies They Preach" by Pamela Benton.]
The Lies They Preach: What The Enemy Never Wanted The Church To Know is a non-fiction book by Pamela Benton, written to correct the belief and orientation of Christians concerning the end times that are recorded in the Bible. It's a book that focuses on explaining the events that will happen before, during, and after Rapture. In the six chapters of this book, Pamela delves deep into the misconceptions of the end times that Christians have.
In 2005, Pamela and her daughter both get caught in a near-fatal car accident, which leaves the author partially paralyzed. She decides to seek the face of God during her trying times, struggling with pain and taking care of her daughter. The author becomes dedicated to reading the word of God and getting closer to him. In her walk with God, she realizes that all she has learned about rapture–through preaching–contradicts what the Scriptures mean. As instructed by God, Pamela has put into this book all the information she got from meditating on the Scriptures to help other believers change the assumptions they have gotten from different Rapture doctrines.
Many Christians have asked questions regarding Rapture, the resurrection of the two witnesses, and false prophets. The author believes that many Christians are being deceived by their spiritual leaders who have stopped preaching about the end times to their followers. According to Pamela, many pastors and spiritual leaders don’t preach about Rapture and what it entails anymore because of the fear of losing their congregation. More attention is now given to doctrines on prosperity, wealth accumulation, social status, and worldly accolades while less attention is given to soul-winning which is paramount to see God’s kingdom. She explains to readers why soul-winning is very important, and she relates it to the two witnesses coming back to life for the sole purpose of preaching the gospel of Christ before they are eventually killed.
The author also explains with Bible verses the prophecies written in the Scriptures which are already happening. Pamela admonishes Christians to know whom to follow as leaders because of false prophets with deceitful works who are masquerading as apostles of Christ. In her writing, she clearly stated that every person will be responsible for themselves on judgment day, not their priests or pastors. Some of the objectives of this book are to prepare Christians for the perilous times, to stay connected to God, and not to give fear a chance in their hearts.
This book admonishes readers to live a holy life and to live as Christ did. However, Jesus Christ didn't involve himself in government issues–as indicated by the author–because he knew that the government along with unbelievers were set to crucify him. I am a Christian. I believe this should not be a yardstick for Christians who seek to be in the government. According to the Bible in Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” a Christian with a renewed mind should strive to be in the government, as true believers are needed in top places – to correct the belief that a righteous person shouldn’t get involved in government issues.
This is a very informative book. I was surprised to read that the anticipation of the second coming of Christ is bad according to Amos 5:18-19, “Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! To what end is it for you?” I wish I could talk more about the numerous misconceptions believers have without giving a spoiler. I’ll suggest you read this book to find out.
What I liked most about this book is the continuous use of Bible passages to support her views. She didn’t give a fact without at least one Bible verse. The language she used was very straightforward. It’s a well-edited and well-written book with no grammatical errors; therefore, I award this book a perfect rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to Christians who wish to learn more about Rapture and the second coming of Christ. It’s also suitable for readers who like spiritual books. Readers are exhorted to be watchful and prayerful.
