God’s Pen by Harry C. Smith is a collection of Christian poems focusing on various themes, such as freedom, salvation, and trust in God. The author provides his personal story of encountering God, writing about some of the significant events that occurred in his life. The tone in the text is informal, personal, and direct, engaging the reader in the book.

The author begins by supplying a summary of his life. He writes about his profession in the United States Air Force, as well as his addictions to alcohol and cigarettes. He then describes his encounter with Jesus that delivered him from his addictions. As a result of his journey with God, he became a talented writer, writing poems about Christian themes. The main section of this book includes plenty of the author’s poems, which discuss topics such as deliverance, difficulties, and faith. The writer also mentions the names of people that inspired him, including famous people like Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. At the end of the book, the poet offers some inspirational thoughts that are aimed to motivate the reader.

There were many positive characteristics in the book. More specifically, I appreciated the fact that the poet utilized rhyme in his poems, thereby creating a creative atmosphere. Also, the author created interest and enthusiasm in the text through the use of linguistic devices and narrative techniques. Moreover, the titles of the poems were creative and original, grasping the reader’s attention. What I liked most in the book were the beautiful pictures and illustrations, which added value and creativity to the text. In turn, this created a vivid atmosphere in the text, engaging the reader.

What I disliked most in the book was the fact that the writer made many grammatical, spelling, and typographical errors, which undermined his professionalism. Therefore, the book must undergo another round of professional editing so that any errors are found and removed.

This book will appeal most to Christian readers that like reading motivational poems and stories. Christians will enjoy this book more, as the author includes many verses from the Bible, and he writes from a Christian perspective. So, atheists and non-Christians may find this book offensive.

All in all, I rate this book with 3 out of 4 stars. I did not give the book a perfect rating, due to the huge number of errors it contained. However, a lower rating would have been unfair, as the author has created an original and creative book.

I don't read much poetry, but I do like that this is from a Christian perspective. I'm so happy that the author was delivered from his addictions. What a testimony. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the review! I don’t normally read books of poetry, but this one sounds like it’s worth a read. Were the errors and typos very distracting?

Poetry is a beautiful thing when personal encounters are embedded in them. With the themes this poetry book covers, it looks like an inspiring one.

Turning to a creative outlet after trials such as addiction is always an interesting thing, and I'm glad the author did so while finding God. It shows a good deal of faith and belief to do that.

I'm not really a fan of poetry. I find it quite difficult to understand. Thanks for the review though
