Review by MamaSiren -- A Bloody Book by Chris Bowen
Rating: 4 out of 4
I very much enjoyed "A Bloody Book" by Chris Bowen. I will be honest and say that the title is what piqued my interest and while the book wasn't quite what I expected I was far from disappointed. I don't think that there was anything in the book that I disliked. Bowen had me hooked and I'm definitely glad that I took the time to read it.
The book follows a young boy named Maxx. Maxx has been dealt a pretty crappy hand in life and if we're gonna stick to the card game analogy, imagine playing a game of UNO and only getting hit with skips and plus fours continuously. I feel like this is a pretty accurate description of Maxx's life. If you've been dealt a bunk hand in life then you will definitely be able to relate to the book one way or another. I think that's one of the amazing things about this book, though. Even if you've never been through any of these situations specifically I feel like you would still be able to identify with the emotions attached to them.
The story really gives the reader a reality check. You really get that behind every struggling child lies a story. Their story may not be laid out for you to read, but there's always one there. I hope that there are millions of teachers who take the time to read this book. If there's ever a child struggling in your class please don't use it as a chance to ridicule or belittle them. Let them know that you're there, that you're rooting for them, nudge them in the right direction, because even the smallest of actions or reactions can make a difference. If there's ever anything to take away from this book I feel like this should be it.
When Maxx's deadbeat mom and dad leave him and his litter sister to fend for themselves things go from bad to worse. Honestly with the set up they have it makes you wonder how they're even alive. It really just comes down to Maxx being a trooper and really stepping up for him and his baby sister. A visit from an unknown man with a connection to his mom and dad doesn't exactly make things any easier. This is the part of the book where things start becoming clear. Where you see where things truly begin.
In conclusion "A Bloody Book" is about a boy with not a lick of luck and what seems like the entire world telling him he can't be more than where he's come from. It's about a boy who's tried to forget how to feel or care until a teacher told him he could be more. It's definitely worth the read. I really hope that you'll take a chance and read this book. It won't disappoint.
