Omega Awakens, by C.J. Hansen, is the first book of the Alpha-Omega Wars series. A mix between a coming of age story along with fantasy/supernatural themes, this book is a great read for young teens to young adults.

From as far back as she can remember, Anna has always been able to see auras, various colored lights surrounding a person’s being. While seeing auras often brought her trouble, she has no clue how powerful her gift is until one night changes it all. With the Beast of Highgate running loose, the streets of Victorian London are far from peaceful. As Anna learns more about her ability to see people, she learns that others can see just like her. The fight between good versus evil is brought to its peak as Anna discovers that a significant threat threatens to tear her world apart.

For the most part, I was thoroughly engrossed in the novel. The author’s detailed descriptions of each scene made it easy to visualize the scenery and characters. What I liked most about this book was how the author vividly painted each scene with an elaborate narrative. This made the book engaging to read, and I felt like I was physically there for each part. The world-building was interesting and believable since there were portions of the story that were interwoven with famous historical events. I also liked reading the fight scenes as it added tension and suspense to each scene.

Moreover, the author spends time building up Anna’s character through her interaction with other characters and events that take place in the book. You not only see the world through Anna’s eyes, but you delve deep inside her mind as you read about her hopes and fears. Anna’s character was also relatable. Her struggle with trying to find a place in the world can resonate a lot with young readers. The book also explores common themes such as friendships, good vs evil, love, and adventure. There are elements to the story that is a bit frightening, but it adds to the suspense.

Overall I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. The intricate descriptions of events, characters, and scenery made it easy to give this book 4 stars. There were a few grammatical errors, but they did not detract from the book. I would recommend this book to readers, particularly for young teens, who like fantasy books.
