Review by Fatima_Palacios -- Chasing Dreams
Chasing Dreams is the new installment of the series of The Toki girl and The sparrow boy by Claire Youmans. We travel alongside Azuki and Shota, two brothers that lost their parents to the greed of a man that was supposed to protect their village.
As the kids travel together with a monk, they try to get to the new people in charge of their small town so they can keep their names in the books. Proving that they are alive. This is all with the understatement that if they keep their names in the book, they would be able to live their lives as humans instead of birds.
I do want to clarify that this book does not work as a stand-alone. So I highly recommend reading this series in the right order.
A war has been set loose in their hometown. They need to get away from the guards and army ready to slay everything in their pass. Azuki pretends to be a boy and a student of the monk Yuta, who has decided to help them get through the difficult situation and help them settle as humans. Shota has inherited a boat from his past adventures and wants to sail and live from the sea. Azuki on her part wants to design things and have a happy life as both a human and a Toki bird.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. The author never ceases to surprise me with the lore of old Japan. Something worth mentioning in the plot is that the Americans have found a resting place in Japan. Looking for a mineral to help them in their travels. Azuki knows little about this but is able to understand who the bad guys are. During their travels, they meet extraordinary people and more human birds that try to take Azuki as a price or even as a wife, to bear more bird children.
What I liked the most is the dept the author gives the characters. This is listed as a young adult and historical fiction book but touches so many topics that are still relevant today. The fact that it all happens in old Japan just makes the story better for the reader. I highly recommend this book to young children and teenagers who love fantasy but are also interested in historical fiction.
Something I didn't like is that often in the book, some parts of the story feel like they were dragged too long. Besides that everything was great.
I was lucky enough to review the first installment on this series so I've seen how much care the author puts on her works and how much she has grown. Now about the rating, I decided to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The editing was great and I couldn't find any mistake. There are no curse words or nudity and if friendly to every religion. I'm hopeful I'll keep reading this series and providing my thoughts on it.
