Underrated YA novels and series

Post by Imperio »

Let's give some attention to some hidden gems in the YA category! We've all heard about Harry Potter and the Hunger Games series, but for those looking for new reads (that are actually good) or simply hoping to grow the fanbase of a book or series that deserves more love, this is the place for you. Share your finds!

Some examples I have to give are The Dark Mage Series by Rachel E. Carter, the Delirium Trilogy by Lauren Oliver, the HDU series by India Lee, Under the Never Sky Trilogy by Veronica Rossi, the Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout, and Bite the Bullet by Angela Louise Mcgurk.

I want to recommend The Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology, both by Leigh Bardugo. I discovered these books only a few months ago and I am obsessed with them. They have everything! Great characters, interesting villains, romance, action and the universe is so amazing and original. It's definitely a series that deserves more love and I highly recommend it.

Ruta Sepetys books are awesome if you enjoy historical fiction! I especially recommend her newest novel, The Fountains of Silence. Besides that, Midnight Thief by Livia Blackbourne is a YA fantasy I read a few years ago that I really enjoyed (though, if I remember correctly, I didn't enjoy the sequel as much and would have preferred for the story to end with the first book).

The Dreamwalker books by J D Oswald! I've never heard anyone talking about these books but I really enjoyed the first one and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series

I know this is an older series, but The Inheritance Cycle, by Christopher Paolini, includes Eragon. One of the best dragon books I've read. Not to mention the author wrote it when he was only 18. The movie was fun, but not nearly as amazing as the books. Loved them all!

I believe Suicide notes is underated. I used to read it all the time. It's about this boy that goes to an asylum because he's a danger to himself. As you read the story you see why he's there and what really went down. This story is lgbtq and sensitive on rape so if that's not what your into this book may not be good to read but it shows what happened in his life that made him question everything.

The following is a list of some of my favorite YA Series, I don’t know if they are underrated but I don’t see/hear a lot about them.
  • The House of Night novels
  • The Series of Unfortunate Events series
  • The Pretty Little Liars series
  • The Thirst series
  • The White Rabbit Chronicles
  • The Wake Trilogy
  • The Spiderwick Chronicles
  • The Pretty Little Liars series
  • The Peculiar Children series
  • The Crank series
Of course these aren’t all of them just some of them.

Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse is amazing! I completely agree.

Other YA series I love include Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's Beautiful Creatures (teenagers, magic, mystical creatures, romance), and Amanda Hocking's Watersong series. Both have great characters and conflicts and awesome takes on magical creatures!

If you want to read some Greek mythology combined with adventure and magic, I would recommend Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus.
