Most times individuals often conform to the wishes and desires of others without doing what they want. Sometimes this stems from not wanting to hamper their relationship with others. However, they may realize that it is time to do things that make them happy, and this decision may have a positive or negative impact on them. Perfection and Other Illusive Things revolves around the life of a young teen, Eden, who realizes that she has been living based on the standards and expectations of her loved ones. She soon decides to stop being her old self and subsequently, she adopted a new self, which was in contrast to what her mom and friends believe in.

Unapologetically, Eden starts going to places, behaving in ways, and wearing clothes that were not approved of by her mom and friends. This sudden change of hers will determine how her relationship with them will turn out.

J. Mercer in her book, Perfection and Other Illusive Things, successfully sustained my interest throughout the flow of the book through her superb choice of words, the mind-blowing conversations between characters, and the level of description present in it. While reading the book, I smiled and giggled occasionally. Although the romance present in the book appeared to be rushed, I found it appealing and sweet.

What I loved most in the book is the nature of the conversations between my two best characters, Eden and Hawk. It was effortlessly beautiful, and sometimes it turned out to be poetic! While reading their part, I hoped that it wouldn’t end so soon. It was that enthralling. I also loved how the writer portrayed the romantic relationship between them. I found it to be awfully pleasant. For these reasons, I’m giving this book a rating of four out of four stars.

On the other hand, at the end of the book, the writer included excerpts from another book of hers, which was about 19 pages! It was quite overwhelming, and I didn’t see the need for such several pages. The foregoing is what I disliked about the book. However, this didn’t affect my level of appreciation for the book.

I discovered absolutely no form of error in this book. Therefore, it can easily be inferred that the book is professionally edited. The book contains profane words and erotic scenes. Lovers of teenage books will find this book appealing and relatable, and I recommend it to them.

I am currently reading this book and so far I absolutely love it. I like how the author gave some of the female characters names that are traditionally given to males. She really owns that essence of being teen-angsty and insecure especially that feeling you get your senior year of high school!
