Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants by Caleb J. Boyer is a young adult novel. For a debut book written by a twelve-year-old boy, this book has surprised me. The novel is about the story of two best friends, Mathew and Ryan, who wake up on a sunny beach one day having almost no memory of their pasts. The only thing that they do remember is each other’s name and that they were playing PlayStation. With no idea of how they ended up on the beach on an island, they have to come up with a means of survival and find out who put them there and why they are here. The following young adult fiction book is the story about the survival and the difficulties these boys face on that island.

The question is whether Mathew’s and Ryan’s friendship powerful enough for them to get off this island. Can they gather all their strength and overcome this challenge?

While this book is written by a boy who was 12 at that time, I couldn’t find any errors. His style is pretty impressive, and it shouldn’t be compared to an adult. His writing is simple and innocent. I initially thought that I wouldn’t enjoy reading this book, yet I enjoyed reading it. Even with a few repetitions of some dialogue, the author had my undivided attention throughout.

Throughout the book, Mathew and Ryan face challenges that keep getting hard. They escape sharks and kill ugly beasts. The things that I liked about this book are its lessons. Ryan and Mathew together face these challenges and overcome hardships. They realize that they have a better chance of survival if they manage these challenges together as a team. Their bond gets powerful through the challenges they face.

The theme of friendship and survival is prominent in the book. The best friends face these challenges just as humans face problems in their day to day lives. The thing that bugged me a bit was the repetition of some sentences. For example, how the boys are exhausted after each challenge but are thankful after finding food and water. I believe this is an innocent mistake, I can’t expect the author to be that experienced, since he was only 12. The thing that confused me about the book was its ending and, I hope the author explains it in the upcoming books.

Finally, I rate Island Games 4 out of 4 stars. It is mesmerizing how beautifully Caleb has written this book. The development of both characters and the plot was enjoyable. I am sure pre-teens will love reading this book. Adults who want to read something light can too enjoy this book.
