Official Review: General Jack and the Battle of the Five ...
Give honor to whom honor is due. So goes the saying that is often brushed aside in the quest for power. General Jack and the Battle of the Five Kingdoms by David Bush is a book that is full of lessons, and quite entertaining.
There were five animal kingdoms, but one kingdom ruled them all. King Roar the lion was the omnipotent monarch of the Feline Kingdom. Everything proceeded from him and everything returned to him. The fearsome felines backed the king. Next to the fearsome overlords are the upper class. They include lions, tigers, wolves, buffaloes, giraffes, and others. All five kingdoms lorded it over other tamer animals who were not organized enough to form guilds. These were a pathetic lot. They included the sheep, the goats, the pigs, the chickens, and others. The protagonist, Miaow (a cat), finds himself and his relatives at the base of this hierarchy. They are constantly being preyed upon. Their lives are uncertain and filled with misery. The rulers rule with an iron hand. Any complaint would provoke an instant and brutal repercussion. This has been the situation for Miaow all his life. From a vantage point, he watched as his young wife and four newborn babies were eaten up by a band of marauding coyotes. But change is on the way. After his encounter with General Jack, things took a turn for the better. With the help of Scratchy and Sabine, they steadily built a strong resistance that eventually led to the fall of the 'infallible' empire. After this great achievement, we would expect a 'happy ever after' life for all. But things do not always turn out the way we imagine.
From the very first page, I was captivated. The story is written in the first-person narrative, and the reader is made privy to the thoughts of the protagonist. I found this book to be very entertaining and humorous. I didn't want the story to end. It's been a while that I read a book as hilarious and exceptional as this book. I found absolutely nothing to dislike about this book. What I find most appealing about this book is the honesty of the protagonist. He never seeks to hide his flaws. He admitted that he had used his wife and four babies as a bait so that he could escape with his life.
This book has been professionally edited. There were no typographical or grammatical errors. The characters were well-developed. Some scenes are described with such clarity and accuracy that every creak and sound could be discerned by the reader. David Bush has become one of my favorite authors.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I love everything about this book. There are parallels between the story and some famous battles in history. It depicts how power can corrupt individuals, making them manipulate others for selfish reasons. The moral lessons to be learned from this book are numerous. There were no sexual innuendos in this book. Although it contains animal characters, I don't think this book would be suitable for kids. This is because it contains advanced vocabulary, and its subject would not hold their interest. Readers aged 13 years and above would find it appealing.
