Farewell, Fair Child by Joseph Amirikhas is about an adolescent boy's experience in high school. Even though everyone goes to high school, each person experiences it differently. I found myself entertained by this boy's journey through high school, but I also had some mixed feelings about the story.
As the description says, this book focuses on protagonist Jason Tristum's social experiences. I enjoyed some of the content but realized quickly that this character looks at the world through a very sexual lens. Whenever Jason meets a new girl, he spends a lot of time describing their physical traits and how he's infatuated with them because of those traits. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, since we also get to learn some about these girls through their actions and how Jason describes their personalities and his feelings towards them. In fact, seeing Jason's perceptions about different characters, both male and female, is what I liked most about the book.
What I disliked most was that a lot of the sexual content felt out of place. Did the girls really need to show him their breasts and cleavage so often in school? Also, Jason has erotic encounters with girls who had no business messing around with him. Even though the scenes themselves were written well, knowing who was involved completely ruined my enjoyment of them.
Overall, this book is a very mixed bag. At first, I was hooked because the writing itself is engaging and flows well. However, some of the erotic content is hard to stomach because of how out of place it seems. I would have only finished half of the book had I not been reviewing it. Additionally, the book had several typos and an ending that felt very abrupt. I give this book a 2 out of 4 stars.
