Review of Island Games
Without any recollection of their pasts, Matthew and Ryan woke up disoriented and alone on a peculiar island. They have no idea where exactly they are, how they got there, who took them, and what these people want from them. The only thing they know is that they need to survive. In order to sustain themselves long enough to find a way off this island, the two best friends have no choice but to work together and face what the island has to offer them. Little did they know that this was no ordinary island, and the challenges that await them will make them question reality.
The two main characters in this book are just teenagers. However, throughout the book and until its end, it was still unclear how young they are. I had no idea what their exact age was, which was vital for me to visualize them properly. The two characters would often throw sarcastic remarks and corny jokes to each other that made me think they were around 15. However, they would also often be very strategic and creative, making me reconsider my impression of their age.
The thing that I liked most about this book is how the author portrayed the island in itself. It was sufficiently detailed, and I can clearly visualize in my head how it would look like. Aside from that, the book also offers multiple lessons to readers, such as the value of friendship and teamwork. I especially liked the bond between Matthew and Ryan. The fact that they came to the island without any memories besides their memory of each other tells a lot.
The only thing that I did not like about this book is the humor that borders on trying too hard. However, I could accept it considering the age of the characters. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the rest of the book. I would recommend this book to readers who are into adventure and mystery. However, readers who would prefer to read books with older characters may pass on this one. Readers who want to avoid cliffhanger endings should also move on to the next book.
Island Games, by Caleb J. Boyer, was exceptionally edited. While reading it, I encountered no errors at all. In conclusion, this was an enjoyable book, especially if read by the right audience. Even though I sometimes cringed at some of their dialogue, I loved reading how they worked together to survive on the island. Because of this, I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I look forward to reading the next ones and finally getting some answers.
