Review of Sounding Out Semantics
Like all living beings, language continues to evolve. This evolution has led to the formation of a branch of science termed linguistics. Because of the complex nature of language, linguistics is divided into several branches such as phonetics, semantics, pragmatics, syntax, and morphology.
In the book Sounding Out Semantics, R.J. Mott Jr. explores the limits of philosophy by focusing on semantics and pragmatics. Semantics focuses on the meaning of the word in question. Pragmatics suggests that the true meaning of words can only be correctly understood and interpreted once the context is understood. Philosophers have invested time and resources to understand linguistics and have put forth valid arguments to support their respective findings and convictions. Mott Jr. believes that the distinction between pragmatics and semantics is flawed and illegitimate. His hypothesis is that speech is influenced by factors like time, location, the speaker’s history, and context. In this book, Mott Jr. endeavors to prove that all human speech is conditioned by verbal behavior that has consequences.
The book is structured in a manner that is easy to follow. Its content is presented in a format that allows even a layperson to comprehend the topics with ease. The book comprises seven chapters that cover different facets of language, mathematics, and science. Each chapter opens with an in-depth analysis of the semantic approach that has been put forth by various distinguished philosophers, followed by the author’s non-semantic approach and take on the subject and a summary of the chapter.
Reading the book, I could tell that the author is a seasoned scholar who invested time and has gained a great deal of knowledge of the subjects explored in this book. You cannot mention the origins of philosophy without mentioning subject matter specialists and founders such as Plato, George Berkeley, and Aristotle. I liked that Mott Jr. did not only cite the works of these acclaimed philosophy scholars, but he engages their work from an analytical yet enlightening stance.
The book was professionally edited as I only came across two grammatical errors.
There was nothing to dislike about the book. The author’s new and refreshing approach to analytical philosophy, mind, mathematics, science, and epistemology is a critical contribution to the body of knowledge that will offer scholars an opportunity to engage and develop the respective study fields.
I am rating the book 4 out of 4 stars as I cannot fault it. I can only applaud the author for presenting this thought-provoking, insightful, and compelling body of work on fundamental topics of universal interest.
This book is ideal for academics in the fields of linguistics, science, mathematics, and epistemology. Readers who are fascinated by the origins of language and speech will delight in this book.
