Review, Andrea Cremer "NightShade"
in the beginning of the series we meet Calla Tor and Shay Doran. The fate of the world will eventually (as it usually does in teen paranormal adult fiction books) rest in their hands. Calla has been told all her life that the people who are in charge of her are the reason for her very existence. Every comfort she knows, every luxury she's experienced she has the Keepers to thank for, and in turn she is to use her wolf transformative powers to protect them. Shay is a mortal boy who knows nothing to the contrary of a mundane life and until he meets Calla would never have suspected anything otherwise. Calla is promised to another young man (Renier Laroche, aka Ren) and is to be married at the age of 18 and therafter produce offspring at the Keepers command. Much like in non-paranormal life, however nothing goes as anyone planned, (least of all Calla) and a great war is brewing because of it. The story, i believe, is inteneded to promote freedom of choices, and freedom to choose love above all and it does a decent job of it. But where would Ms. Cremer be if she only wrote one book and love conquered all in it? Well certainly the audience wouldn't have as much fun if she had stopped there, and so she didn't.
The greatest attributes to the Nightshade novel are that it highlights the importance of knowing the truth of who you are and what you're standing for. Calla could easily have made different choices and still there would have been a fun story for us the audience, but certainly not as captivating as the one written. This first novel gives a great foundation for the books to follow and a lot of different premsies for the audience to work with. Theres intrigues, there's a love triangle, there's lies and maninupluation and suspense. This book has friendship, bonding, new love, and uncomftorably-comftorable love alike. It has passion, and adventure, and it's certainly a book i'm glad someone had reccommended to me given all of these things.
I would usually write a paragraph here with what I thought could have been improved in the story or the book but simply all i can say is the book would not have been what it was if it had been different in any way. The abusive attributes of certain characters, the far too trusting attributes of others, and the witty quips that could probably only come from highschoolers mouths kept the story entertaining throughout. The supernatural characters and elements were kept to a manageable amount to keep pace with, and the evil always just dark enough to keep me in suspense. I would like to have something to say here that would be constructive in any way, but i think for now, at least for book one, i am content to say the story was lovely.
Overall this Cremer's story had me wrapped around it like a pig in a blanket. Once i started i couldn't put it down and until i know how this story ends (book four) i don't know that i'll be satisfied. Its an easy, fun, and adventerous read and i would reccommend it for those interested in paranormal, young adult fiction. Girls may not fall into love as easily with Ren or Shay the way that Twilight fans instantly loved Edward, but the romance is there and this series is definitely an enjoyable one.
