I loved the characters in this book and the way it was written, though at first I was hesitant. The book is entirely in letter format from the view of the main character's point of view. Her name is Juliet and she did some writing for a newspaper during the war. She lived in London but had to evacuate. A man reaches out to her in a letter and tells her about this island he lives on that was occupied soldiers. This man formed of book club to get them through the times and eventually multiple members start reaching out to Juliet. She starts caring about these people and decides to go visit them. I couldn't put this book down.

This is also one of my absolute favorite books, and I was also initially unsure about the letter format. For a war book it is also surprisingly funny and optimistic.
