Island Games is a suspense-filled novel about two best friends stuck on an island. Caleb J. Boyer combines suspense, action, and comedy in this story. Ryan and Matthew wake up on the sandy beach of a deserted island and have no idea how they got there. The last thing the boys remember is playing video games in Matthew's bedroom. How did they end up on a beach is the question? Their survival instincts kick in. Soon Matthew and Ryan realize they need to find food and shelter. A twisted game ensues between the unknown person who brought them to this island and the boys. Harsh obstacles are thrown their way and as soon as a challenge ends, they receive rewards like food and water. It becomes a game between the boys and whoever brought them to the island.

This book is fast-paced. Caleb J. Boyer captures perfectly the strong ties that exist between Matthew and Ryan. Teamwork between the boys is a common theme. A perfect example is when Ryan falls into a pit, Matthew rescues him. The main character's witty banter lightens the mood of the book. The comedy contrasts with the suspense side of the book that adds another dimension to the writing. I enjoyed the action side of Island Games, specifically when the boys worked together to defeat the beast. Matthew feels good when he passes a challenge boosting his confidence. Matthew realizes he needs to become a soldier using not only his strength but intellect as well. I became very invested in the characters when their memories of home faded because it made me sad.

Island Games ends with a cliffhanger. It's well-edited and, I couldn't find any spelling or grammatical errors. I do not have any negative points for this book.

Since the book is about two teenage boys, I believe it would appeal to a younger audience. Young adults between the ages of 12 and 15 years will enjoy it. There are many positive lessons to be learned from Matthew and Ryan, such as never giving up and the importance of believing in yourself.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I think it is very entertaining. It is a modern-day version of books such as The Hardy Boys and, Nancy Drew popular in the early '90s. There is never a dull moment in this book. It is an excellent read.
