I am not usually a fan of YA fiction. However, I could not put this book down. I have read The Fault in Our Stars well over 7 times since the book first came out. Each time I've read it, I have found more meaning and depth in the book. I was under the impression that it would just be your run-of-the-mill, tragic cancer book or just another teenage romance. I find that there is so much more to the book. You are first introduced to Hazel Grace Lancaster. She is your average depressed, cancer ridden teen. She's got litte ambition, a total of one friend, and spends all of her time watching reruns of America's Next Top Model and reading the same book, An Imperial Affliction, over and over again. Now, let me take a pit stop here. An Imperial Affliction is one of the reasons I felt like this book was worth a second read through... and a third, forth, fifth, etc. You really start to find interest in this story within the story. You begin to really feel for Van Houten(the author of An Imperial Affliction), even though you really don't want to. In addition to that, I feel like there are a lot of metaphors strewn throughout the entire book. I love that because metaphors play a big role in the book. As I was saying before, Hazel is miserable. She gets suckered into going to group with a few other cancer kids where they gather in, as the group leader calls it, "The Literal Heart of Jesus." This is where Hazel becomes friends with Issac and through Issac she meet the "star-crossed love of her life," Augustus Waters. The book takes you on a journey through their relationship. There are lots of funny moments, but many tender moments. You will find yourself doubling over, sobbing hysterically by the end of this book, no doubt about that. But when all of your tears are shed and you've finally caught your breath, you'll pick the book right back up and start it all over again. Absolutely beautiful novel with lovable, unforgettable characters. A lifetime favorite, in my opinion. A+, John Green! Another job wonderfully done!
(if you happen to like this book, i would highly recommend, "Will Grayson, Will Grayson." it's a collaboration and it was pulled off perfectly!)
I read this a while ago, haven't seen the movie yet, but I completely agree with what you said about "An Imperial Affliction"! I love stories that have stories within them because it shows how much effort the author puts into their work. What really hooked me though was Hazel's general personality and just the way that she views her life. It seemed much more genuine than many other YA books that I have read. And of course the humor that the other characters bring as well.
