Mockingbird, Kathryn Erskine

"There's a weight on me that holds me down and keeps me from floating and falling and floating and falling like a bird."

After a recommendation, I thought I'd give this book a go. I quickly realised that it was a fairly simple read, with small chapters so I could read a few at a time and didn't have to spend hours reading to get to a place where I can stop, which is always good for me because it's often that I'm distracted!
However, once I started reading this book I didn't want to stop at the next chapter; I carried on until I'd finished the whole thing! The book is from the perspective of a young girl named Caitlin who has Asperger's syndrome, and has just lost her brother, Devon, in a shooting scandal. Devon helped Caitlin understand the world, and the whole story is Caitlin's journey to find 'Closure' after Devon's death, which involves spending time on her favourite hobby, drawing, and trying to make new friends with various methods and growing as a person, alone.
The story is very cleverly written, and it expresses clearly the depth of research that has gone into the disorder Caitlin has on Erskine's part, and this made me connect more with Caitlin herself, as it was very interesting to discover the ways that people with this disorder think. I particularly like the way that Caitlin has a love for words and loves her dictionary, and often repeats words people have said and follows this with a definition. Narrow-minded people, as we all are sometimes, would think this as odd but the way that it is told in this book makes you feel in awe of Caitlin's intelligence and protective over the girls in her class that tease her.
One negative is that it doesn't seem to have a significant ending point and it does not feel that the actually storyline is going anywhere, but it is a very sweet book and I would definitely recommend it if you want an easy-going but loving and inspiring book to read.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review, feedback is welcome.
