It's Kind Of A Funny Story by Ned Vinizzi

Post by stillnotspecial »

There are some books you hate, some books you love but none have reached the level of It's kind of a funny story in my mind. It probably has a much more sentimental significance in my mind as someone who i considered the strongest person I know said that nothing has done more good to them that this book. What so you all think>

Ned Vizzini, to me, was such an underrated author. It's Kind of a Funny Story was so perfect in the worst way. I must have read it at least three times. I even watched the movie.

I know right! Ned Vinizzi is such an underrated writer. In the world of Young Adult fiction where writers like John Green and others take the crown Vinizzi is a lost gem. What hurt me the most was the fact that even though however promising this book was and its whole battling against suicide theme and the hopeful ending Vinizzi still committed suicide, and when i tell that to everyone who reads this book, the ones who were inspired and loved everything about it, most of them stop dead in their tracks and this speaks to me as a person who I recommended this book to said "what is the point of living when someone who told us to live is dead. I really wanted to see what people had to say about this and I realized that this book was so vastly underrated.

Definitely. I think that knowing Ned's personal life and tragic end only intensifies the feeling you get reading the book. But yes, I think the novel is extremely raw and powerful. I've noticed, from reading his other works, that it's just the way he writes. It's a shame that John Green, while extremely talented, gained more traction than Ned. Ned had important values he could have shared if he were a bit more popular.

This book got to me in a way no other book has before. Mostly because i, myself, am depressed and this book just describes depression in the most honest and relatable way. How it started with "it's so hard to talk when you want to kill yourself" and ended with "Live. Live. Live. Live." just fills me up with emotions that i do not understand. Ned Vizzini truly has a way with words.

The last line speaks to me a lot because when i first picked this book I was recovering from an extremely bad time and my friends were very happy that I was reading again because I sorta stopped during somewhere in the middle. So every time after I would go away from their vision they used to quote the last line from it. And the whole point about Nia was just so infuriating because there are a lot of Nia's who act my friend in my life and I hate them all and I almost tore the book in half somewhere before the admission to the hospital.

After reading all of these posts about this book, I am feeling a little embarrassed that I have never head of it before! I will most certainly have to look this one up and read it for sure. After all of the comments about how amazing the writing is, I would be a fool if I didn't. Thanks for the review!

i read this book in a week solid. It was phenomenal! I really loved the plot and the base of the story was great. I expected it to be a little sadder, but that's okay because depression isn't always sadness. It can be nothing.
