Pretty Girl by Amy Heugh is a novel about loss, tragedy, and the fragility of innocence. Readers are taken through the life of Izzy Scott, a seventeen year old girl whose parents recently divorced. Moving away from a life she wishes to forget, her father, and her brother, Izzy and her mother attempt to start anew in St. Augustine, a small town in Florida. Her old life is never too far away, though; it haunts her dreams, her thoughts, and affects her life every day. She doesn’t find a reason to open up and be happy until she meets Mason Winchester, an infamous motorcycle loving, trouble-making bad boy. Mason is more than he seems, though; he’s had his fair share of pain and hardship and Izzy can’t help but want to know his past as much as Mason longs to know hers. Mason and Izzy draw readers into their world, leaving them curious and hungry for answers.
I liked this book a lot. The main characters, Izzy and Mason, kept each other guessing throughout the book, which kept me guessing. The mystery of it kept me reading and reading, wanting to find out what each character’s story was. I haven’t been so invested in characters in a long time; these two had me hooked, my curiosity causing me to stick with them.
I have to mention, though, that this book seemed very slow-paced to me. If not for the curiosity that it sparked in me, I would have been bored quickly. There are many chunks of this book that are either Izzy or Mason having an inner monologue, which I didn’t mind so much, but other people might. I would definitely not recommend this to someone who only likes fast paced reads.
The only thing I could not stand about this book was the mistakes in it. I kept track of each one for a few chapters, but eventually stopped because there were too many. It was maddening. Simple things that could be easily fixed, like grammar and spelling mistakes, are present in every single chapter of this book. It’s so unfortunate that they were there, because I was yanked out of the flow of the story every time one popped up. Without the mistakes, the read would have been much more enjoyable.
For all of these reasons, I give Pretty Girl 2 out of 4 stars. I want to give it three. I may, even, want to give it four. The story and characters were so captivating. I enjoyed so much of this read. However, I cannot give it more stars in its current state. There are too many mistakes. If they were to be fixed, and they could be, as they are all easy fixes, then the book would be deserving of more stars.
