If you are interested in reading a gripping novel that will send chills down your spine, The Memoirs of Elikai by David Alexander is the perfect book for you. This fantasy fiction focuses on the clash between the two philosophies of free will and destiny. In the beginning, we are introduced to Danny Elikai, a teenage boy engulfed by depression and consumed with darkness due to the loss of his family.

Escaping from his grief-stricken state, he learns more about the philosophy of free will, which represents light, and his mission of finding its king. Danny becomes very determined to eliminate the evil philosophy of destiny, its evil supporters, and the emperor that threatens the existence of the philosophy of free will. He must, however, brace himself for the struggles that lie ahead. Does Danny have what it takes to fulfill his mission and defeat the emperor of destiny? What philosophy will eventually emerge as the governing force of creation? Only the readers of this book can find out!

This book has many positive aspects. The blend of different genres such as fantasy, adventure, and horror made this book very exciting to read. The things I really liked about this book were the vivid and in-depth descriptions and the exceptional narration of frightful and gory scenes. The author paced the horrifying scenes in a way that I could feel the fear of the characters. I got scared due to the author’s compelling and authentic descriptions of the monstrous creatures and Danny’s terrifying nightmare and vision. One technique that added to this book’s charm was the author’s impressive skill in powerfully crafting genuine emotions and making me experience the characters' feelings.

Danny’s grief and depression were realistically portrayed. This book also had different plot twists. The choices of some characters, the revelations, and the deaths were unexpected. I enjoyed the unpredictability and complication of the characters. This book progresses so that the importance of friendship in depression recovery and during bad times are not neglected. The fighting scenes between the crusaders and soldiers of light immersed me in the plot and pushed the story forward in an exciting manner.

Furthermore, this book was professionally edited, as I noticed very few dialogue and grammatical errors. This is a very enthralling book that will keep you turning pages. I definitely will not hesitate to read the next book. I only noticed one negative aspect in this book. It is a minor complaint, but I like chapters beginning on new pages. All chapters started on fresh new pages, but chapter 7 did not. Overall, this book had a significant and intriguing plot. It had a great storytelling technique and is undoubtedly one of the best books I have ever read. For these reasons, I rate this book four out of four stars. I recommend this book to anyone who loves horror and fantasy fiction with an emphasis on the dynamism and unpredictability of the characters.
