Levi Kast is a teenage boy who lives in Shady Glen, New York. All Levi has ever desired was attention from his father. But even when Levi's dad isn't at work, he acts as if Levi doesn't exist. Levi notices that he's also invisible to all his female classmates. But that changes when the new girl, Taylor, takes an interest in him. Levi finds Taylor extremely annoying, but he can't seem to get her to leave him alone. One day, after being forced to hang out with her, he finds himself disturbingly infatuated with her.

Despite not wanting anything to do with Taylor, Levi can't shake this odd fixation he has with her. The more time he spends with her, the more he can tell something about her isn't right. Levi also hasn't forgotten about Stacy, his one true crush. Although Stacy has never noticed Levi before, he has now grabbed her attention. But Taylor won't let Stacy impede on her plans. What does Taylor have planned for Levi? Can Stacy save him? And will Levi finally tell Stacy how he feels about her?

Tainted Luck by Cynthia Austin is a young adult novel filled with mystery. Throughout the story, Levi strives to impress Stacy while trying to figure out Taylor's strange behavior.

I liked the added humor in this novel. Levi would make jokes that would make me giggle and bring a light touch to the writing. I also liked Taylor's personality. Although Taylor was the villain, I found myself drawn to her. Taylor was bold and mischievous, which made her a unique and engaging character.

I would recommend this novel to readers who like young adult fiction and light mysteries. The book has 124 pages and can be perfect for anyone looking for a short, entertaining tale.

One positive aspect for me about this novel was the characters. Because of the novel's short length, I didn't expect to form any connections and thought the characters would fall flat. But each character was highly realistic and offered something essential to the plot. Besides Taylor, I could also connect with Stacy. Stacy was immensely sassy and confident. I saw myself in her, and that's why I liked her. One negative aspect for me about this novel was how theatrical the ending was. Near the end, the characters became unnecessarily dramatic and didn't seem like themselves.

I give Tainted Luck 3 out of 4 stars. I gave this rating because the ending felt like a subpar play. And the suggestive comments from Levi's dad towards Taylor and Stacy were disturbing. I found no errors.

I wonder what’s up with Taylor. This is one of the reasons that I like young adult fiction. The characters are really unpredictable.

I think your review covered this story very well. It sounds like a typical plot, though, with not a lot of substance.
