Review of The Promised Land
We all know how the death of someone we love could affect our lives, not to mention that of a mom. The Promised Land by Jacques F. Felix is a book that will make you sit back and appreciate having people who care around you. Imagine what it feels like to lose both parents and grow up all by yourself.
Joseph and Paul made up their minds to leave Haiti and go to America, which they believed would have greener pastures. One had a law degree and the other had a political science degree. Though they didn't agree with everything, they loved each other unconditionally. After their visas had been rejected numerous times, they decided that the only way they would be able to leave Haiti and get to the promised land was by boat, and they were both willing to take this risk. They both knew what was at stake and the risks involved in travelling such long distances by boat. Before travelling, they visited their mother's grave for the last time. To them, leaving Haiti was a do or die affair. It is either they leave or they die trying.
In the country where I come from, I know a lot of people who would risk anything to leave their country. You would understand how this twin felt better if you came from a developing, or at worst, an underdeveloped community like I do. Though I'm not a twin, it was like this author was writing about me. The plot was well-detailed and very realistic. The author kept the characters simple and developed them. This is a simple, short, and emotional book. After reading this book, I couldn't help reflecting on the book. If only our government would give us the necessary amenities, maybe people wouldn't want to leave our country at all costs. I loved every page of this book.
The only thing I disliked about the book was the pictures. I found them unnecessary and childish. Aside from that, I loved everything else in this book. Life in Haiti was like a deep, unforgiving ocean. You needed to swim hard to get out of it, boys. " This was one quote that kept them going. I would love to read a sequel to this book. I want to know what became of the twins. I was very impressed with this book. The author had me deeply immersed in it.
I would give this book nothing less than 4 out of 4 stars. I would love to see the author write a sequel to this book. The book had zero errors. The editing was top-notch; it was exceptionally well-edited. I would recommend it to people who love reading books about family love.
