Review of The Crystilleries of Echoland
Imagine that there is a parallel world, a world in which our mirror images live. These mirrored images, these reflections, call themselves echoes and we are their sounds. These translucent beings, these echoes, are alive in their realm only as long as their respective sounds live on in ours. So if someone wants to get rid of an echo, he only needs to follow the unsuspecting sound.
At the age of two, twin siblings Will and Emmy Cleary disappear. Their story can be found in what is known as the "Gravestone Book." The "tombstone book" also contains the many unsolved cases that took place before the twins disappeared. What makes the story of the Cleary children so special is that Will returns home and is kept safe by his trusty wolf and hawk. His parents never stop searching for his sister, and at the age of twelve, Will decides it is time for him to search as well.
The Crystilleries Of Echoland is a captivating coming-of-age novel penned by Dew Pellucid, and I have the pleasure of reviewing the audible version of this award-winning teen fantasy. To be perfectly honest, I am not the biggest fan of audiobooks. But the premise of this novel is so intriguing that I just could not pass it up.
I have always found the idea of parallel worlds fascinating, and the author's take on it is truly unique. Dew Pellucid has created a wondrous world of shimmering beauty and dark secrets that Will Cleary is just learning about. Danger lurks around every corner, there are unforgettable characters, and loyalties and friendships are constantly tested. The author has so much imagination that you can literally feel the emotions of the characters and see the incredible and sometimes terrifying scenes they encounter.
The Crystilleries of Echoland is fast-paced and action-packed. B.J. Harrison does a wonderful job with the narration. He manages to capture the unique personalities and voices of the various characters. His tone of voice expresses the many different emotions flawlessly. He does not just read this book aloud, he really tells a story.
I really enjoyed listening to this young fantasy story and am happy to give it 4 out of 4 stars. Although this book is intended for middle school aged children, it does contain some fairly graphic action scenes. If such scenes bother you, you may want to wait to read the novel, or perhaps even skip it. However, for those who are more comfortable with the sometimes gruesome scenes in many fantasy novels, this book is a good choice. I think it will especially appeal to fans of books similar to those in the Harry Potter series.
