The House of Dark Shadows

Post by cmp librarian »

Liparulo, Robbert. The House of Dark Shadows. Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Inc., 2008. Pages 295.
ISBN: 978-1-59554-727-9.
When the King family moves to a rural town and begins looking for a new house, they never imagined they’d find an old Victorian estate in the middle of the woods. However, as they settle in and begin cleaning and repairing the place, 15 year old Xander and his younger brother David discover that the house has secrets and possesses strange rooms that transport them to places in the past.
Personal Comment: I enjoyed this book, which kind of surprised me as I usually am not a horror book person. I could see teen boys really getting into this book and I’m looking forward to reading more of the series.

I read book two in the series......

Liparulo, Robbert. Watcher in the Woods. Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Inc., 2008. Pages 292.
ISBN: 978-1-59554-728-6.
This is the second book in a series about the King family and their strange house with mysterious rooms and bizarre experiences. After their mother was taken (in book one) by some strange hulk like creature the rest of the King family is determined to get her back no matter what, they set-up a Mission Control room to help them plan, but when a stranger shows up to take their house things seem to be spiraling out of control for the family.
Personal Comment: I could hardly put this book down; I’m hooked on the series and can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. Teens who like strange and creepy but not too scary would enjoy this book.

I read through 1 and 2 and into the beginning of the third one, and then I hit a serious issue: it was just too darned intense. I loved the storyline, I loved the setting, and it's right up my alley in many ways, but I had to walk away from it. (This is probably just me. I can't watch the X-Files, for example.)

I loved the actual books, with their hardcover illustrations sans dust jackets. Oh well.
