Review of Broken: Book 1
Set in a time far ahead of ours, we walk through the life of Keesa; as she is fondly called, into humanity, or rather, what is left of it. Braxton A. Cosby's Broken: The Young Hellions Series - Book 1, gives us a view into post apocalyptic humanity and the lives and decisions of a few who take it upon themselves to change the world for the better. We get to take a look into the politics, traditions, beliefs and the evolution that occurs during such time. At an age where there are as many humans as there are non-humans, and of which the human race asides being at loggerheads, are made up of sophisticated and elegant against brute, barbaric and religious albeit organized folks living worlds and distances apart. Keesa who as a slave and serves as a Scout, resides among the Establishment: a group known to be of the former description of humans, gets to watch her life take a quick turn, one that catches her without warning. We witness her various experiences through her many failures, self-pity, the loss of her loved ones and her realization of how much worse life outside the walls can be, while occasional becoming aware of her love life, hopes and fears. She is taken on a journey of discovery in the midst of all these and gets to know the expectations on her as leadership and responsibility beckons.
The positive aspects of this book, of which suspense ranks as the first; leaving you in anticipation of the next part of the series, also include how carefully detailed and punctuated the descriptions are, making for an easy imaginative experience as one travels through the pages. The author creates excitement with his words that any lover of adventure would in no doubt find impressive leaving you hoping, cheering, smiling and wishing all through the storyline.
The negative aspect for me seems literally non-existent except for the knowledge that a few of your favorite characters might not live till the end of the story which is not really a negative but a sad reality.
I will rate this book 4 out of 4 because, asides the plot being flawless, the author does a great work in his choice of words in depicting items and terrains and as such enabling the reader to fully grasp the message while stimulating his imagination.
I will recommend this book to all lovers of sci-fi, intrigue and adventure as it is well equipped to keep you on your toes throughout your read. Also to those who might be interested in a post apocalyptic novel. And not forgetting those who have always been firm believers that there is more to life than we see and are curious as to what the future might look like.
