Review of The Crystilleries of Echoland
Ten years ago, Will and Emmy Cleary disappeared. When only Will returned his parents became shells of their former selves. They spend all their time looking for Emmy. One day Will decides to do something about it. The result is an adventure to another world.
Will Cleary grew up reading The Gravestone book. He knew it held the multitude of names of those that have disappeared over the years. His name is included in the book, but Will is the only person to ever return. At the time he was only two years old and is frustrated daily that he can’t remember anything. All Will knows is he was returned to the lake with a plant and two wild pets in tow. He wants more than anything to find his sister and save his parents from their heartache. Ten years after he and Emmy went missing Will decides to act. He grabs the plant and dives into the lake hoping for a miracle. When he wakes up two people are watching over him. Except they aren’t people, are they? They are translucent and call themselves Echoes. Humans, the two explain, are Sounds. When increasingly shocking information is revealed, Will is faced with a daring mission to save himself, Emmy’s echo, and the entire Kingdom of Echoland.
The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid was a slow burn that drew me in. The worlds the author created are truly unique. The little details throughout the book truly shine. This story is an amazing example of friendship, family, and responsibility. It’s one that I plan to share with the preteens in my life.
I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. My review is of the audiobook version. B.J. Harrison is the narrator, and he shines brightly. His use of voices for the various characters was magical. I did not detect any profanity or any major errors while listening to this version. While there was some intense action scenes, I did not find the gore level to be inappropriate for preteen readers. My one critique would be the recurring fatphobia directed at the disguise of one of the characters. I felt it to be unnecessary and quite over the top.
The Crystilleries of Echoland is a book that will stay with me. Dew Pellucid created a world that I will be curious about for years to come. This would be a wonderful audiobook to enjoy in the car as a family with young adolescent children. I could see the magic of this story appealing to a wide audience. I highly recommend joining Will and his friends on the adventure of a lifetime.
