In Chosen: The Path of Heroes by K. I. Price, an evil was operating in an alternate world called Kambia. The evil was in the person of a being referred to as the 'Overlord' and had existed for thousands of years, weakened in another dimension called the Netherworld. The evil was gathering once again with the years that had gone by. Only the power of 'the Chosen,' led by 'the One,' who bore the essence of the Overlord, could defeat it. The empress of Kambia, Empress Zalira, Itvin, a wizard of the Veergastaad Order, Ezra, a mystic of the Kragian Order, and King Seti-siamun of Ahnis all agreed that 'the Chosen' must be summoned and the prophecy activated. On earth, Tauzuri 'Zuri' Jones was experiencing strange things. He saw strange lizard-snake creatures all around him. He had no idea that his life would take an even stranger turn.

The author was descriptive in his storytelling, especially when he described certain characters and places. This would help readers visualize the story, as it seemed like visuals were integral to the book. The author also included drawings of certain symbols he described. With the author's efforts, readers might find slipping into the world he created easier. With all the talk about alternate universes and prophecies, the book seemed like a cross between Doctor Strange and Legend of the Seeker.

The author created diverse and unique characters and animals to entice and excite readers. These creatures had foundations in the familiar. Examples would be the 'Cheelu, ' a product of the cross-breeding between a horse and a camel, and the wolf-like creature called the 'Hemohounds.' There were other new and fresh characters in the book, like the glowing pink species of people called 'Libit' and the 'Nevareyt,' who were winged men. All these visually appealing characters gave the book a colorful feel. In addition, the characters and places had cool names with an African tune to them. This added to their uniqueness as well, like 'Kambia,' the name of the alternate world, and 'Adeola Palace,' which was the palace of the empress.

I loved that the story flowed seamlessly. The storytelling was straightforward and did not confuse me, despite the story's many layers. More so, the story intrigued and thrilled; it had a plot that would no doubt hold readers' attention. Even as the story progressed, I could sense more exciting twists and surprises. This was further intensified when the story ended on a cliffhanger. One more thrilling aspect of this story was the characters' dialogue. Not only were they filled with intriguing details veiled just enough to leave readers in suspense, but I also loved that the author allowed their conversations to be lighthearted and infused with humor. The slight romance added more warmth and thrill.

Chosen: The Path of Heroes was an exciting read, and I couldn't stop reading it until the very last line. The plot, the characters, and the twists were just the things that readers of sci-fi and fantasy stories live for. It was an exceptionally well-edited book. I loved every part of it and couldn't find anything to dislike.

I recommend Chosen: The Path of Heroes to readers who enjoy stories about magic. Finally, I rate it four out of four stars.
