Placid, Wisconsin, 1871--the year of the country’s largest passenger pigeon nesting. Georgina Burkhardt’s older sister, Agatha, has been declared dead and buried. Georgie, however, has her doubts. Concerned about her own involvement in the affair and convinced that the sheriff has made a mistake, the smart, sharpshooting 13 year-old sets out with Agatha’s former sweetheart, Billy, to find the truth about her sister’s disappearance and finds big trouble in the form of outlaws, wild animals, and other dangers along the way.

Amy Timberlake beautifully weaves together historical fiction and mystery in a first-person narrative tale that is sure to captivate the reader with its strong, female protagonist. Her vividly detailed descriptions of the wildlife and Wisconsin frontier bring the story to life, and an occasional dose of humor helps to lighten what could otherwise become a somber read.
