Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Post by meg-reads »

I hate to say this, but I honestly enjoyed the movie adaptation of Perks more than the book itself. This is not something I usually feel. Generally I argue for the book and against the movie. However, I found the movie adaptation of this particular book to be much more relatable for myself than the book was. Charlie as book narrator sounded slightly autistic to me whereas in the film, he sounded like a broken teenager, like a boy you would meet in your own high school. Also, some weird scenes such as Charlie going to his teacher's house (seriously, how creepy is that???) were left out of the movie.
I read the book in one day. It was an easy and engaging read. I would definitely recommend it to any fans of young adult fiction. However, in my own personal opinion, the movie was a more relatable and thus (for me) enjoyable experience.
One last thought: I find that The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a young adult version of Matthew Quick's The Silver Linings Playbook. Has anyone else noticed this?
